By 1860, it had grown to over 10,000 people and by 1870 it had reached its peak with over 25,000 residents. However, due to economic problems brought on by depressed times in America and Europe combined with military conflicts in these areas such as World War II (1939-1945), Traverse City’s population decreased dramatically during these years until it hit its low point around 1970 when it had only 707 residents living in total
