Today, Traverse City enjoys a lively cultural life with several theaters, museums and festivals throughout the year.

Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Traverse County. The population was 37,541 at the 2010 census. The first European settler in what is now Traverse City was Nicholas Kooistra, who arrived in 1797 with his family from Holland. The early years of Traverse City were difficult due to yellow fever epidemics that struck the area in 1853-1855, killing more than 100 people including many prominent citizens such as Mayor John Prentice and Judge Augustus Kelley. However, through hard work, innovation and luck over time, Traverse City became a thriving commercial center with its own banking system, school district and hospital system - all while remaining one of America's poorest cities by GDP per capita rankings despite having some high-end amenities like a library and swimming pool! In 1865-1866 when Michigan seceded from the United States, Traverse City became part of Canada as part of Lake Huron Territory under Canadian rule until 1870 when it reverted back to Michigan control following American victory in the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended following Reconstruction era African Americans were allowed to gain full citizenship rights but few did so because most had little or no opportunity for economic advancement within white society; this remained true until after World War II when black Integration began happening throughout most northern U.S.. In 1925 Traverse City incorporated as an independent city; it adopted its present name two decades later during a naming contest run by then Mayor James Worthy when he decided on "Traverse" rather than "Michigan". During World War II local businesses supported military production throughout North America by manufacturing munitions such as torpedoes and bombs; these businesses lost their status once war ended but have since regained some level of recognition thanks to their contributions to postwar reconstruction efforts across America including being featured prominently on PBS' "Parts Unknown" documentary series! Today's travertine landscape can be seen as one result of this years' technological advances which has made much harder rock formations available for quarrying which has led to increased tourism for both locals and tourists alike!
On July 10, 1855, the first steamboat to navigate the Straits of Mackinac arrived in Detroit. The boat was named the "Detroit". It was captained by Captain George W. Smith and Carry on his first voyage from St. Clair County, Michigan to China. The "Detroit" became a popular vessel for travel between Detroit and other points in Michigan, as well as downriver to Chicago and other points in Illinois. In 1857, she made her maiden voyage from Green Bay up the river to New York City. She continued making voyages until 1876 when she disappeared beneath the waves after running into trouble off of Long Island Sound while being towed by a tugboat. In 1898, four steamboats chartered by William Durant sailed from Grand Rapids to Mackinac Island with goods for Mennonite settlers there. They were the "Mackinac", "Druid", "Golden Eagle" and "Lionsgate". On June 14th they ran aground on rock Spit near Mud Lake which caused their loss of $871 worth of supplies valued at over $1 million today
