Traverse City is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat ofMuskegon County. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Traverse City was Nicholas Sacco, who arrived on July 4, 1824, with his family from Rome, Italy. He named his new land "New Venice." The first post office in Traverse City was established on July 1, 1829. A later post office called Muskegon Heights was established on March 26, 1881; it closed its doors on December 16, 1912. In 1882 Wm Hays organized a wagon road from Detroit to Mackinac Island along what is now Highway M-15 (now M-23). This wagon road became known as the Hays Road and led to major settlements such as Battle Creek and Ionia Heights inmuskegon County. In 1886 James Fenton opened a lumberyard at present day Elmira and Commerce streets in downtown Traverse City which soon became one of the largest lumberyards west of Chicago. After several years of operations he went bankrupt in 1902 and sold all his holdings to John Lambertson for $1 million dollars (the equivalent of $106 million today). Lambertson renamed himself Dred Scott National Land Company Limited after United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Bemis' famous argument that Africans were not citizens of America because their supposed ancestor had been brought over as slaves by Europeans some hundred years earlier – an argument which failed to convince many Americans at the time but would eventually be accepted by most jurists thereafter. Shortly thereafter Lambertson announced plans to build a large dam across the Straits of Mackinac into what is now Muskegon County − one which would have created huge quantities of water needed for irrigation purposes downstream − creating yet another massive economic development opportunity right near Traverse City's doorstep! But alas this dream never came true as shortly afterwards Lambertson fell victim to financial troubles once again (this time due largely to American entry into World War I).[2] The only other major development events during this time period were changes made to city boundaries - previously Commerce Street ran east-west through downtown while present day Elmira Street runs north-south - creating an enlarged business district around Elmira square;[3] and construction began on One Depot Square just south Main Street off First Avenue - becoming home to many local businesses including National Broadcasting Corporation's Flint Journal Building still standing today thanks entirely to its original owner's donations.[4][5][6] All told it would be more than 50 years before any significant activity took place within or around downtown Traverse City again! However over that same period there were countless smaller initiatives taking place throughout muskegon county overall – some resulting in tangible benefits for local residents like increased access to jobs and services while others simply didn't result in anything materialistic subsequently;[7] but without question no single event has ever done more good for locals than when John Lambertson donated $106 million dollars back then!
