Taylor was a small town in Michigan at the time of its incorporation as a village on July 1, 1835. It became an incorporated town on December 15, 1845. On November 17, 1851, it became the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Taylor was James Cook (1796-1877). Cook and his wife Margaret had four children: James H., John F., Mary A., and Ann E.(1801-1878). In 1836, Isaac Sawyer settled in Taylor. He built a cabin on the east side of State Road 2 near where present day Park Township is located. In 1840, John Prentice established himself in Taylor with two families. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 20 south of Main Street. By 1850, however, Prentice had moved to Dexter Township where he resided until his death in 1865. Some of the pioneer citizens who lived in Taylor during this time include: Moses Lyon (1800-1860), David Sibley (1802-1868), Ebenezer Vanderlip (1799-1870), Nicholas Mathers (1798-1867), Levi Coffin (1792-1865) and Nathan Hale(1782-1859). On October 3rd of that year, local resident George Jelinek married Maria Mason from Dexter Township while living there with his family members Isaac Sawyer Sr., Anna Prentice and their three children: James H., John F., and Mary A.. After one year of marriage they removed to Taylor to take up permanent residence there on October 10th under the name GJelinek & Mason. The couple had six children; five sons and one daughter: George Jr.(baptized Augustus J.), Lawrence(baptized Newell J.), Emma(baptized Maynard K.), Theodore(baptized Orson T.), Franklin D.(died young)(moved to Duluth when he was nine years old)and Clara GJelinek(moved back home when she turned eighteen months old). They were followed by Leo Jelinek who married Anna Laughlin about 1860 or 1861; Meta Jelinek who married Alfred Swartz about 1870; Julius Niven who married Lillian Sheppard about 1880; Addie Lochner who died young before 1830; Louise Lochnerwho died young before 1830; all born in Taylor between 1800 and 1830. 2ND GENERATION - FRANKLIN DALE JR AND CLARA GEORGE jR WERE BORN IN TAYLOR ON NOVEMBER 17TH OF THIS YEAR AND THEIR FAMILY MOVED BACK HOME WHEN THEY GAVE UP THEIR PRIVATE SCHOOL TO ENTER THE MAIN STREET SCHOOLFranklin Dale Jr./Clara GeorgeJR timeline
