Taylor, Michigan is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Washtenaw County and the tenth most populous municipality in Wayne County. The first settler in Taylor was George Wacker. Wacker's brother and sister also founded Taylor on October 15, 1824. The original plat of Taylor Township included present-day Taylor and parts of what are now Muskegon Heights, Steeleye Falls, and Saginaw Township. In 1836, it became a part of Washtenaw County. In 1868, the county seat was moved from Detroit to Taylor due to lack of space within Washtenaw County for both cities. When Washtenaw County lost its statehood on December 12th of that year, Taylor acquired all of its annexed territory which makes up today's eastern part of Muskegon Heights as well as portions of what are now Saginaw Township and Steeleye Falls Township. On March 1st 1870 - just two years after becoming a municipality - voters approved merger with neighboring Steeleye Falls Township which had been formed less than two years earlier when Jackson township merged into that township along with other townships including Baynton and Harper Woods east of Saginaw Lake. The population growth experienced during this time helped spur development around present-day downtown Taylor and much of eastern Muskegon Heights (including what is now known as "the Arsenal"). This growth has continued unabated to the present day; however some areas have seen decline such as rural Rossville east of Muskegon Lake where heavy industry once thrived but has since declined or been replaced by newer communities such as Sterling Heights/East Lansing or Battle Creek Township in southeast Michigan

Taylor, Michigan is a small town in the far southwest corner of the United States. It is bordered by Grand Rapids to the north and east, Battle Creek to the south and west, and Lansing to the northwest. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1834 by George Taylor as a Methodist preacher's addition to an area that was then known as Springtown Township. By 1840, it had become an Indian Removal Agency post with a population of about 150 people. The post lasted until 1853 when it moved to its present site just outside of town. The first settler in Taylor was John Calkins who arrived in 1835 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on what is now known as Dryden Road near today's intersection of State Route 551 and County Road 3252. He also began trading goods with Indians along his route from Canada for goods they needed for their food supply and weapons against white settlers. In 1840, he married Sarah Lewis who came from nearby Grand Rapids. In 1847, Josephine Wickes settled on land adjacent to Taylor which she donated in memory of her late husband Isaac Wickes (1796-1857). She named her tract "Wickes." In 1850, she married James Hargrave (1802-1885) who had come overland from Vermont aboard the CSS Niagara during the American Revolution. They rebuilt Hargrave's old farmstead on land purchased from another pioneer family located just east of today's village boundary on County Road 4145S Alternate #1II (). They raised crops and livestock there until their death in 1925 (). Their son James Wargrave (1925-2005) continued farming there until his death in 2005 (). The name "Taylor" originated with Captain George Taylor of HMS Fortunate under Commodore Matthew Perry during their American Expedition against Mexico City in 1846-48 . Captain Taylor gave rise to this name because he had been elected commodore general aboard HMS Fortunate after sailing into Mexico Bay with sixty cannonballs instead of twenty like other captains seeking treasure! After landing at Vera Cruz on July 12th & 13th PDT 1846 he discovered huge piles of gold coins & Mexican silver dollars - $146 million worth!!! This discovery inspired President James Ketchum Edwards US Geological Survey Director General Major General Edward Mifflin Polk Order No: RG 106 8vo 1860 map plate pages 167 thru 171
Taylor was founded in 1837 by the brothers Isaac and Gideon Taylor. The town was named for John Taylor, a Revolutionary War veteran who had died in 1795. The first store opened in 1838. In 1872, the town became a city.
