Gun targets have been a part of Taylor, Michigan since at least the early 1800s. In 1835, General William Tecumseh Sherman took up arms against the Indians in what is now Michigan and discovered gunpowder had not yet been developed on this continent. As a result, Sherman ordered his men to find and bring back weapons caches that were being used by the Indians. One such cache was located in what is now Taylor Township. After finding and retrieving many guns, Sherman ordered local blacksmiths to create perfect firearms for him and his troops. The first firearms manufactured in Taylor were called “Sherman rifles” after General Sherman himself. Gun targets can be found throughout Taylor today, but they are most popular in the park district around downtown.

Taylor, Michigan is a small city in the lower Peninsula of Michigan on the eastern shore of Lake Superior. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Port Huron metropolitan area. In 1835, it was named for General John Taylor and his forces that fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn. The first resident in Taylor was George Washington Dickson who arrived there from Holland Township in 1837. At that time, there were just a few families living here and no businesses or schools. For many years, it was a ferry landing with only one house used as a stop on the trip to Whitefish Bay. By 1860, Taylor had two churches; First Presbyterian and Methodist with services being held both at different places around town until eventually finding their current locations where they still meet today: First Presbyterian Church is on Main Street and Methodist Episcopal Church is located on Wyoming Avenue east of School Road. In 1868, Jackson County became territorial territory within Michigan and so Taylor became its first county seat; however, because Jackson County had no courthouse yet (it would be built soon), sessions were held at various homes until finally taking place in 1870 at what is now called “Old Fort” which stood near present day downtown Taunton Township on the west side ofriver just across from present day State Highway M-2 (known as "Lake Superior Boulevard"). With only 2 residents living here when organized by government officials in 1871 as Oakland County - including future president Ulysses S Grant - it took some time for things to progress especially since land purchases were slow coming due to lack of available funds during this early period in county history There are several stories about how General Lew Wallace came through town one day after being looking for water rights near Endicott Lake while stopping off at Fauquier's tavern before continuing his journey upriver which has led people to believe he actually landed hereabouts someplace along river bank somewhere between present day downtown Taylorville & Endicott Landing when he instead went all the way up river past this point (the actual landing site can be found about 4 miles upstream from where Fauquier's Tavern sits today) making him very likely our first elected official locally However another story suggests someone may have actually let slip that Lew Wallace was visiting then local farmer James Shields who lived not too far away from this spot & rumor got started so much so that when agents came knocking on Shields' door asking about him & his home they could hear shouting inside come out & see if we've lost our minds (& likely did) because shortly thereafter news spread throughout central Michigan wire services all over America regarding an upcoming general election & before long fellow citizens began waving flags outside Shields' property waving Indian signs back )& later postmarked ballots arrivecontaining Lew Wallace's image atop Mount Lebanon signifying he'd won big ). Woodward County Commissioners also met here early on prior to designation of Woodward as its own proper county seat but ultimately decided against having their own courthouse since plenty of business already took place downriver (& other towns nearby) In short pretty much everything goes back & forth thru these days between those who live hereabouts today (& ancestors did) responsible for most aspects currently extant within what has become known as “Taylor” community limits today
Taylor was founded in 1837 by George and Martha Taylor. The town grew quickly due to the discovery of a silver mine in the area, and by 1840, Taylor had a population of over 100 people. In 1849, the town was incorporated as Taylor Township. By 1870, the township had a population of 2,500 people. In 1907, the township was renamed to Taylor after General John A.Taylor who served as Commandant of the Union Army during the American Civil War
