Taylor, Michigan is a town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Mackinac Island and is part of the Detroit–Warren–Oakland metropolitan area. The first settler in Taylor was Nicholas Fenton in 1814. In 1827, Levi Coffin purchased land from George Halsey for $5 per acre. The town was platted in 1830 by John Sperry and named after his brother-in-law, James Cranch Taylor (1792-1868). In 1854, Jonas Smeaton built a sawmill on the right bank of the Anaconda Creek. By 1870, there were six mills in Taylor with a population of 1,500 annually. The first telephone line was established in Taylor in 1888. Manufacturing declined during World War II as factories closed down or were moved to other areas; however, since then industry has increased with high technology companies such as Hewlett Packard and Dell Incorporated having their headquarters here. In 1984, Taylor had 2% of Michigan's population but 25% of its total output due to its dependence on manufacturing jobs that have left over time due to downsizing or relocation within Michigan itself as well as outside competition from states like Ohio and Wisconsin which have larger populations without those types of industries. However recent economic growth has been seen through job creation within both tourism/ hospitality and real estate sectors as well as new production lines coming online such as Ford’s Dearborn Plant adjacent to town center which will create more than 300 jobs including many subcontractors who will be employed directly by Ford if it goes ahead with plans to open up an entire large plant hereabouts Taylor is located on Mackinac Island off the shores of Lake Huron across from downtown Detroit

Taylor was a small, agricultural community in the lower Peninsula of Michigan before World War II. It developed around a mill that ground corn and other crops. The community changed hands several times during its history, but it always functioned as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1912, Taylor became part of Macomb County. From 1925 to 1959, it was within Wayne County. In 1959, it became a part of Oakland County. In 1957, when Macomb and Wayne Counties merged to form Cass Township in Oakland County, Taylor remained within Cass Township but lost its status as a town because no new businesses were opening up there after the merger. It did not regain its status until 2000 when it joined the new city of Warrenville in Warren County.
Taylor, Michigan was founded in 1834 by James K. Taylor, a native of Kentucky who had come to the area as a railroadsman. The first post office in Taylor was established in 1836. In 1854, the town was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant, the 34th president of the United States. In 1862, Taylor became the seat of Jackson County after it was split from Oakland County. The county was created from parts of Macomb and Wayne counties. In 1865, Taylor become one of the few Michigan towns to be incorporated as a village when it adopted a charter granted by the State Legislature. The village had no government services but rather provided residents with social and cultural activities such as dances and picnics. In 1888, Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as First Baptist Church) was built on land donated by John Witherspoon Griggs in what is now downtown Taylor. It served as both an early church and community center for many years before being torn down in 1994 to make way for new development.
