In 1863, WILLIAM KNOX founded Knox’s mill which produced flour for local grocery stores before it closed down in 1924 In 1868 THOMAS CAMPBELL set up camp along SR 6 south of present day state road 31a where he began operations as a blacksmithing business known as Campbell & Son until it closed down in 1916 . In 1903 JAMES MCDANIEL established McLaughlin & Company which manufactured hardware products such as ovens In 1923 EDWARD FOSTER purchased Campbel's mill site located east ofpresent day state road 9 north of US 23 for $165 per acre . Foster moved his equipment from Campbel's millsite to his farmstead on East Greenbush Road east of present day US 23 some time between 1925 and 1927 . In the late 1800s, Taylor experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to other industrial towns such as Battle Creek and Sault Ste Marie. This prosperity led to increased traffic congestion on Highway 10 and led to the development of alternative transportation methods such as using carspools or ferries for travel between Taylor and these larger cities. However, by the early 21st century, concerns about air quality had caused many residents in Taylor to flee their homes for greener pastures elsewhere in Dearborn County or even out of state. In 2000 alone, there were more than 20 confirmed cases of cancer associated with breathing polluted air from nearby factories; however, no prosecutions have been filed against those responsible for these dangers since then.
