A band of Cheyenne fought a one-day battle near present day Sturgis on October 8th 1810 against an American force commanded by Colonel James Kieft; this event has been called "The Battle of Little Big Horn" because it remains one of history's most famous Indian engagements. The indigenous people had no fear of Europeans because they knew that white men could not harm them physically or spiritually if they followed their traditional ways living off hunting and fishing resources provided by their ancestors. Sturgis was founded in 1851 by James Armstrong and John Chilton. The town became a center for the agricultural industry, and during its early years it was known as the "Hometown of Ford" because many of the leading citizens were from Ford. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century, reaching its peak population size of around 100,000 in 1905. However, due to economic conditions and changed demographics, Sturgis began to decline in popularity in the 20th century. Today, it remains a small community with a few hundred residents.
