Sturgis, Michigan is a small town located in the immediate area of Cadillac, Michigan. The population was 6,000 as of the 2010 census. It was founded on July 4th, 1867 by John P. Sturgis and his wife Anna Maria McNaught. The first post office opened in 1868. The town has since grown to include over 120 buildings and 1 mile² of land. The original town site was near the current intersection of U.S.-131 and I-96. In 1870, John P.'s brother James Wesselhoeffer bought 7 acres east of the tracks for $600 cash only; this became what is now Sturgis Park (also home to Ford Field). A fire destroyed most of the town in 1871 but John P. rebuilt it with help from subscription money from local farmers and other citizens. In 1902, when Cadillac split into two townships south of I-696, Sturgis became one of those townships under the jurisdiction of Cadillac Township (later renamed Cadillac County). At that time it had a population of 2200 residents and a total land area totaling just over 1 square mile! During World War II, Detroit’s munitions plants were located adjacent to Sturgis along Uptown Road which caused some significant traffic congestion during peak hours! To avoid these jams, US 131 was realigned around town in 1942 so that all traffic would flow through downtown which at that time consisted only of an old schoolhouse and a few businesses (the last being an ice cream parlor). Unfortunately for everyone involved, this new routing also created several more blocks wide streets full of empty lots! 3 years later in 1945 another major change took place when General Motors announced its plans to build their new plant on Quadrangle Road adjacent to I-196 southwest of downtown – once again causing extensive traffic congestion throughout muchoftheday city center! To alleviate these problems they built a bypass road across town called Saginaw Valley Parkway which until recently still exists as part or one block wide sections thereof remain vacant today due to lack or technology preventing their conversion into public open space!
