Sturgis is a small town in the US state of Michigan. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sturgis is located on the south side of the Straits of Mackinac and across from Mackinac Island. The first European settlers in what is now Michigan were French fur traders who moved upriver to trade with Native Americans in 1796. They named their new settlement "Sturges" after General James Wilkinson's military victory over Native American warriors at Lake Huron near present-day Detroit on July 9, 1812. The name originated from a Scottish place called Stratholme (now Perthshire, Scotland). The first post office was established in 1817, and by 1830, there were 16 residents living in what became Sturgis Township. In 1834, US Congressman John Fenton formed a committee to study possible boundaries for what would become Michigan; its eastern border would be along the Straits of Mackinac, while its western border would include much of what is now Sturgis Township and parts of today's Clinton County and Oakland County. When it was decided that only land east of the Straits should be included within Michigan, Fenton organized a group to survey and purchase land east of those straits for $5 per acre ($140 per square mile). This section became Strouds Township when it was organized December 5th, 1835. A post office called Sturges was established on October 15th, 1850; it remained open until 1893 when it changed its name to Clintonville because mail reached Clinton more quickly through Lansing than through Sturges. On November 30th 1860 - even as President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation - General Lew Wallace arrived at Sault Ste Marie with 1,200 men just before dawn to lead an attack against Fort Wright which had been garrisoned by Confederate forces since September 25th 1861 under Gen Robert E Lee; Wallace destroyed or captured all but two guns in that battle before withdrawing back towards Detroit with his army less than 24 hours later In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant encamped his army near modern-day Cadillac on Blackwater Creek surrounded by Confederate troops commanded by Generals Richard Johnson (left) and Nathaniel Banks (right); after dayslong skirmishes Union troops breached this outer line using boats anchored off shore and stormed into camp killing many Confederate soldiers including Johnson), taking control over allinternal supplies Including food for his own army while they starve! In 1847, Sturgis was founded as a trading post on the Shiawassee River. The post became an important transportation and commercial center in the area and was known for its produce, meat, and lumber. In 1871, the post was moved to its current location on the banks of the river. Sturgis became a popular tourist destination in the early 1800s due to its natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural attractions. In 1912, it was renamed after General George Custer during World War I to honor American casualties in that conflict. In 1937, it was designated as a national historic site.
