Sturgis, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the east side of the Mackinac Bridge. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census and 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name "Sturgis" is derived from Swedish settlers coming to this area in 1837 and1838. They named their new community after Liechtenstein Duke Karl Friedrich August von Stuhr (1792-1868). The first Post Office was established in 1847 and was known as Grangeville until 1871 when it changed its name to Sturgis. It became a village in 1903 and a city in 1907. In 1912, it annexed the villages of Grand Rapids and Houghton Heights. In 1916, it became an independent city with its own government and police department. On July 1, 1920, it merged with neighboring Kalamazoo to form what is now Kalamazoo County. The City of Sturgis has developed into one of the most vibrant communities in central Michigan with over 300 businesses located within walking distance of each other as well as downtown that hosts various events throughout the year including Oktoberfest which takes place every September/October downtown. Sturgis is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sturgis County. In 1851, John C. Frick built a log cabin on what is now State Route 8 east of Sturgis and named it after his discovery in Canada of yellow fever-causing mosquitoes that he had sent back as specimens to Dr. Samuel Johnson. For many years, Sturgis was one of only two settlements in Michigan with a post office; the other being Grand Rapids (then part of Michigans Grand Valley). The first mail service between Detroit and Saint Cloud arrived via horseback on October 15, 1854 from Deputy Sheriff John Ladd at the Western House Hotel in downtown Sturgis. The first school opened in 1853 near present-day Midland Road and Summit Avenue and taught for three months before closing due to lack of students. In 1861, after American Civil War veteran Augustus Hermond donated land northeast of town for an academy to be used as an agricultural training school for local farmers, it became known as "Hermond Academy." A new school building was erected on this site in 1865 and continued operation until 1903 when it burned down; however, the educational values embodied by Hermond Academy remain prominent to this day. In 1896, a sawmill started operations adjacent to what is now Midland Boulevard southwest of town; this mill provided employment for many people coming into town during those early days. By 1907, most residents had either moved away or become self-sufficient with their own farms while still keeping touch with their old hometown through newspapers and other communications channels In 1909 Iron Mountain began producing iron ore which caused increased demand for goods available from local merchants . This led to increasing business opportunities for both locals and Outagamie County citizens who were able to get work at Iron Mountain despite colder winters During World War II there were several bombings which resulted in damage but no loss or injuries reported within town limits
