Sturgis, Michigan is home to the world's largest rifle and shotgun shooting population. The city was founded in 1867 by Scottish farmers coming to the area to raise cattle. In 1903, Browning Arms Company Ltd., merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company Incorporated (Winchester) forming what is now Winchester Firearms Corporation (WFC). At this point, Winchester Firearms Corporation had responsibility for all firearm production within the United States as well as export sales outside of America. This gave WFC a major advantage over its competitors as it could control how firearms were marketed and sold worldwide. In 1966, WFC merged with Colt Third Generation Manufacturing Co.,Incorporated (Colt) creating Colt-Winchesterarms Corp.(CWAC). CWAC continued manufacturing handguns but also began producing rifle stocks from 1967 onward under license from various manufacturers including Remington Rand, Savage Arms Co., Stevens & Sons Inc., Sturm Ruger & Co., Bushmaster Incorporated (BUSHMASTER), Mossberg & Sons Incorporated (MOSSBERG), FN Herstal SA(FNH). These companies licensed CWAC to provide them with high quality rifle stocks at very low prices which allowed them to compete head-to-head against other firearm manufacturers. Over time these licenses have become increasingly difficult to obtain as companies have moved their production facilities elsewhere or dropped their stock offerings altogether. However, CWAC continues manufacture of high quality riflestocks today through its subsidiary American Rifleshop LLC located in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Sturgis was a small town in Hillsdale County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of the Upper Peninsula and is within Grand Traverse County. Sturgis had a school district and two churches (one Baptist, one Methodist). The post office closed in 1990. The settlement of Sturgis began in 1834 when fur traders from Norway landed on the peninsula. They named their new village after the Swedish city of Uppsala, which they saw as an ideal location for a trading post because it was accessible by water and had good soil for farming. By 1840, there were twenty settlers at Sturgis. A Presbyterian church was built in 1847 and became known as the First Methodist Church of Sturgis-on-the-Hudson (later called Grand Traverse Congregational). In 1860, another Presbyterian church was built near present day downtown Sturgis and became known as Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. The first store opened in 1867 at what is now US 231/Mackinac Road; it operated until 1991 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1868, George Washington Snyder donated land to create a township; it included all that now stands east of US 131/Mackinac Road except for what is now downtown Sturgis complex including its old bank building which still stands today and has been used as a storage facility since 2002. In 1890, when Bridgeport Township merged with Hillsdale Township to form Grand Traverse County, most of Bridgeport Township's territory lay within Grand Traverse County proper but some portions extending into Steuben County were annexed into Hillsdale Township.. Some people from Bridgeport Township who desired not to joinGrand Traverse County formed their own municipality called "Pine Grove" adjacent to present day Superior Court House off Mackinac Rd south of I-94 WEST just inside the city limits OF Lansingburgh
