Sturgis, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cass County and is bordered by Lucas County on the south, Ashtabula County on the east, Grand Traverse County on the north, and Ottawa County to the west. The town lies in Cass Township on the eastern edge of Lake Sturgis which forms part of its namesake, that large body of water lying between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sturgis were fur traders from Quebec in 1814 who built a trading post there after travelling through Canada's Upper Great Lakes region. In 1825, a group of British officers led by Major-General Sir John Pulteney surveyed and named all or most of present-day Cass Township after General James Kippenbach (1780–1847), an officer in Napoleonic Wars with France and one of Pulteney's aides-de-camp during those campaigns. The township was organized as a civil township on February 14, 1828 under Act No. 3 pro vidi et confirmo (3rd class) from the Michigan Legislature; it became an unorganized territory within Cass County on November 1st 1830 when that county was created from part of Ottawa County following its dissolution as a result of Indian warfare along what are now Grand Traverse and Ottawa Counties eastward into Indiana Territory during that year's territorial designation controversy over which US state should have sovereignty over which area extending into Ontario Territory then included parts today including Detroit & Muskegon Heights counties near Flint). In 1836, Sturgis developed as a commercial center due to its location at one end of Highway M-2 (now I-75) linking Great Lakes ports with settlers moving westward across Illinois via this route. Manufacturing operations got underway soon afterward with construction beginning on two sawmills—the first for local use only six years later—and other businesses followed thereafter such as groceries store(s), mercantile store(s), hotel(s), blacksmithing shop(s), furniture store(s), wagon factory(s) and several stores serving agricultural products such as flour, hay/seed/ potato meal, beans/ lentils/ peas etc., while others handled more general services like plumbing supplies (a few still exist today), carriages (manufactured until about 1870) AGT petroleum refinery opened December 15th 1912 doing business as Superior Petroleum Company main plant until January 1st 1951 when it merged with Amoco Refinery company
