As the world’s largest leather festival, Sturgis is a place where holster enthusiasts from around the globe come together to trade stories and learn about firearms. The festival has been held annually in early July since 1897, and draws thousands of people who enjoy browsing booths full of new and used handguns, shotguns, rifles, knives and more. In 2017, Holster Nation was proud to exhibit our latest line of holsters – the Colt Hi-power II. The area now known as Sturgis was first settled by Dakota and Ojibwe people in the 18th century. In 1818, John C. Frémont explored what is now Michigan and named it for General Sturgis, who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1827, George Stephenson built a road between Detroit and Lake Erie to bring goods and passengers overland to Grand Rapids via the Houghton Road. As more travelers arrived in what is now Sturgis, restaurants and stores opened up to serve them. By 1912, there were two hotels and four churches in town. The growth of Sturgis led to its incorporation as a city on November 3 of that year with a population of 24 people. On December 1st of that year, an amusement park called Park Circus was opened which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in town until it closed down in 1974 following fire damage from a winter storm

Sturgis, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan located on the Sturgis River. The population was 2,057 at the 2010 census. It is one of two towns in Kalamazoo County and its sister town of Battle Creek, Michigan. The other town is Grand Rapids. The first settler in what became Sturgis was Levi Atchison who arrived in 1837 from Kansas City, Missouri. He founded a log cabin on the riverbank opposite present-day downtown Sturgis and named it Atchison Landing for his home state of Kansas City. The first post office was established at Atchison Landing in 1839, and by 1840 there were four settlements with names including Griggstown (now part of Battle Creek), Harper's Ferry (now part of Houghton), Sibleyville (now part of Cadillac) and Springerville (now part of Grand Rapids). In 1847, John Prentice built a sawmill on the riverbank downstream from Atchison Landing which he named Prenticeville after himself and his son John Prentice II. By 1850 there were twenty settlers living in this area with six mills including three owned by Andrew Mellon who later became US treasury secretary under President Franklin D Roosevelt. In 1857, Abram Cooley settled near modern day Battle Creek along with his brother Isaac Chase Cooley and their families; these early investors had pooled money to purchase 400 acres upstream from where they now live between them and others such as Augustus Dodge, James Gadsden and others who would follow soon thereafter to contribute land around what would become downtown Sturgis Township but all surrounding agricultural land still remains today within present-day township limits only! This enabled future entrepreneurs such as George Wurster to bring engineering brilliance to downtown development during post-World War II years when many larger businesses moved out into suburbia because rural areas could not support high levels of employment like those found hereabouts due to lack or low access to natural resources etcetera etcetera! Downtown redevelopment has continued unabated through various incarnations over recent decades culminating presently with current occupants taking occupancy back in 2017! So much for that old saying about “A house without bricks isn’t worth building” – true even more so when those same bricks are sourced locally rather than being imported elsewhere & processed abroad!! Today our quaint little town stands proud as an exampleof Rust Belt success story thanks largely to its residents hard work ethic combined with creative entrepreneurship - something we continue see reflected throughout our community both big & small! From its namesake street inviting visitors upriver for ice cream Socials following summer sunsets (& winters too!), thereto becoming known as "The Main Street Of The World" - complete immersion into old world charm no matter what timeOf Year you visit ;) And that's just the exterior...what lies beneath reveal surprises each time you explore...& we're not done yet!!!
