In 1872, Judge George Armstrong Custer set off on his first campaign trail in America when he rode into town to rally support for Ulysses S Grant's reelection bid against rival John Frémont. Custer's visit helped spur development around town as farmers began leasing land east of the Canadian River for agriculture or lumber production; this area would become known as Old Town Sturgis today. On July 16, 1876, during the American Civil War, Union forces attacked Confederate forces under General Joseph Ewing near present-day Battle Creek;Resulting in more than 50 fatalities including 20 Union prisoners who were hanged from trees after their surrender (the event remains one of history's most infamous massacres). In 1886, local entrepreneur Augustus Kelley organized a bazaar that drew attention to downtown Sturgis from across Canada due to its unique architecture and setting overlooking Lake Superior – becoming one of North America's first outdoor popular markets. After World War I ended in 1918 with Germany losing control of East Prussia following World War I boundaries adjustments made by Russia pursuant to Treaty Of Trianon,[3] many Germans moved into and settled in eastern Michigan--leading some early settlers there to call it "The German Settlement".[4][5] The 1920s saw significant growth in auto sales based upon Lower Peninsula demand for new vehicles tax free because no other region offered such relief (which continued until 1990).[6] With Prohibition repealed in 1933[7], commercial beer sales increased; eventually making downtown Sturgis home to one of America's first brewery districts.[8][9] By 1941 nearly all businesses closed except two which were operating as nightclubs –one serving local whisky while another operated as an air traffic controller tower.[10][11][12] During World War II much activity took place within downtown; such as munitions manufacturing and armory operations plus military recruit training exercises taking place throughout central Michigan[13]. On November 4th 1945,[14][15]: Mayor Elmer Jorgensen presented President Harry Truman with a proclamation designating October 8th National Military Heritage Day recognizing all aspects related thereto including wartime activities conducted within municipality limits[16]: This marked historic achievement especially given that prior thereto only City Council approval was required for any major construction undertaking amounting over $10000 outside municipal limits! Motorcycles became increasingly popularized through various means during this time period such as Harley-Davidson advertising their "One Motorcycle Drive", groups like MCLC [Michigan cloverleaf club],Handlebars On A Hike!, renting motorcycles etc.; often resulting in numerous crashes due TO inexperienced riders sharing roads without helmets OR lack thereof - leading police departments receiving complaints about increasing numbers & severity OF motorcycle accidents particularly along newly created rural / agricultural routes adjacent roadway mileage limitations . . . As noted earlier some early residents did manage To enjoy Fourth Of July fireworks displays each year LOCATED IN old town square opposite courthouse despite prohibition laws still prohibiting public gatherings/set up/use following closure Of alcohol services several years prior
