Sturgis, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is located on the St. Ignace River just north of its confluence with the Missaukee River. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1871 by Deacon John and Mrs. Lydia Smith as part of a wagon train that arrived from Chicago for the Great Western Railroad. The village quickly grew and became a stopping point for stagecoaches travelling between Detroit and St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1877, the first electric streetcar service began running in Sturgis and it soon became a popular tourist destination for those travelling to Lake Superior or Chicago through the region. In 1902, when Michigan statehood was granted to America, Sturgis voted to become a part of the new state and continued to prosper as one of its key commercial centres despite occasional floods which destroyed many homes and businesses along the riverbank during winter rains. On July 4th 1912, during World War I (1914-18), Ulysses S Grant visited Sturgis on his way back from Battle Creek and spent his final days at Redford Hotel before being transported back across country in an ambulance convoy dirigible leased from Wright Aeronautical Company which he piloted himself over Grand Traverse Bay on December 12th 1914 en route to Ypsilanti General Hospital in Flint where he died two days later after complications from surgery related to a heart attack brought about by souvenir medals he had taken off American soldiers dead or wounded at Belleau Wood During World War II (1939-45), much of what is now downtown Sturgis was damaged by bombing raids resulting in many buildings including several churches being loss control and collapsing into their foundations shortly afterwards – but amazingly most all human life was spared within minutes or hours once detonations had stopped under clear sky conditions . In 1945 local resident Floyd Ewing organised a drive called “Operation Plunder” which resulted in more than 100 pounds (40 kg) of booty being looted from military barracks throughout upper Michigan prior to V-E Day celebrations The postwar years were difficult for bothSturgis residents and business owners who were struggling with increased competition coming from larger towns such as Jackson Heights, New York City; Jackson Heights annexed by Detroit; Greenfield Township merging into Detroit; Florence withdrawing from Michigan; Algonquin County becoming Cook County Illinois; Allendale Township joining Hartland Township; South Haven merged into Muskegon Heights while other communities such as Leland Moody became charter members of metropolitanDetroit
