Sturgis, Michigan is a small town in theeast corner of Mackinac County, Michigan. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Mackinac City metropolitan area. In 1907, Sturgis became one of only two cities in Michigan to become an electric community; the other being Detroit. The first settler in what is now Sturgis was George Sibley and his family who came from New York in 1827. Sibley built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River and named it after himself, Sturgells Landing. For many years there were no people living in or around Sturgis because there was no water accessible to them. In 1873 John Roebuck platted what is now downtown Sturgis and named it for General David Gregg, who had led American forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). At that time there were only a few buildings and no residents because transportation between Mackinac Island and Kalamazoo was difficult and expensive. A post office called "Sturges" was established in 1875, but failed to take off due to lack of customers. In 1883 JT White founded a flour mill on Big Road southwest of town which soon became prosperous enough to be given its own post office name: "White's Mill". In 1901 white farmer Elisha Goodridge donated land north of town for a public square which still exists today - Goodridge Park - naming it after himself: Goodridge Ridge. In 1910 Clarence King established an agricultural company processing fruit trees on upper Main Street near where he lived with his family until his death in 1978; this company remains active today as King Farms Incorporated.. When World War I ended hostilities ceased by 1919, most businesses closed except for one –the local bank which reopened with new powers following prohibition – under then-Mayor Harry Waterman Sr.'s leadership The Bank Building was designated as city hallservices headquarters until it burned down October 2nd 1933 . A 100 foot high steel girder bridge spanning Ottawa River connecting downtown with State Street carrying US 41 over Mohawk Creek collapsed November 25th 1931 due to ice conditions caused by severe weather conditions just before Thanksgiving holiday; fortunately no lives were lost however four homes sustained extensive damage including replacement windows . After years of planning $15 million dollars was raised through private donations culminating February 26th 1957 when Mayor Harry Wirth signed legislation creating Downtown Development Authority effective March 3rd 1957 providing guidelines for development within boundaries set forth by DDA

Sturgis is a small town in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. named for General George Custer, who died in 1876 during the American Civil War, Sturgis is also home to Custer State Park and several museums. It is one of two towns in its county that are still unincorporated (the other being Battle Creek). The community began as a seasonal cabin-building and fishing camp called "Custer's Lake" on an area now known as North Avenue. In 1881, the first post office was established in Sturgis. By 1900, there were over 100 people living here. The early years of Sturgis were difficult due to lack of access to water and transportation. However, with development by entrepreneurs such as H W Sleepy and J R Stephenson, things began to improve beginning in the 1920s when electric transportation became available. In 1935, a new courthouse was built and renamed after former territorial governor Harry Wolkentinck. This courthouse played an important role in developing local government which continues today with a variety of governing bodies including village councils and township boards In 1941, World War II began and many residents left for military service; however, many returned later on when hostilities ended. After the war ended, most residents remained intent on maintaining their small-town lifestyle while enjoying some degree of modernity including automobiles and television sets which arrived during the 1950s along with better schools nearby which helped spur growth throughout the 1960s into the 1970s before slowing again through 2000 Today's economy is based mostly on services such as medical care but some businesses have begun specializing within specific industries such as brewing or advertising . There has been growth recently in residential areas around town center making it easier for commuters to get around without having to leave town; this trend will continue until at least 2030 if predictions are correct
