Sturgis, Michigan is a town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saginaw Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Sturgis was made in 1824 by John Potter and others around a small creek called the Big Creek. A post office called Sturgis was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. The name of the town comes from General Anthony Wayne's victory over Native Americans near what is now Sturgis on July 4, 1794. In 1847, two brothers named Jacob and Jesse Sturges founded a cattle drive that ran through present-day Macomb County and into central Canada. The Sturges Ranch eventually became one of the largest beef herds ever driven across North America. In 1860, during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest routed Union forces at Battle of Tiptonville outside of Detroit; as a result of this victory, many Confederate soldiers abandoned their units and fled to Canada where they took up permanent residence. The discovery of oil rigs in 1930 changed everything for Sturgis as it became an important center for oil production throughout much of North America including southern Michigan where oil fields were discovered later that decade (the Mackinac Oil Field). In 1933–34 local resident Clarence "Butch" Haggerty organized an unsuccessful effort to create a city government for what would become Sturgis but this idea also failed to gain traction within the community.
