It is located on the Sturgis-National Battlefield Park, about 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Lansing and 57 miles (87 km) northwest of Detroit. The name "Sturgis" means "battle ground". The first European settlement in what is now Michigan happened in 1795 when French traders and missionaries founded a fur trading post at Cadillac on the Rouge River. In 1816, Canadian fur trader John Chisholm established a post near present-day Sturgis with Wabash Native Americans as his allies against the United States. After Chisholm's death, control over the area passed through British hands until it was acquired by Michigan in 1827 as part of Indian Territory under the terms of Treaty #9 following the American Civil War. In 1835, Colonel Isaac Shelby started construction on what became known as Fort Shelby which served as a garrison for new settlers on Mackinac Island duringthe initial stages of development for Sturgis Township. The first school was built here in 1840 and gradually other buildings were added to accommodate growing community membership including churches, stores and residences. A park was also developed around this time including an artillery battery that served as a mock battle ground for local military engagements throughout its history; today only remnants remain from this skirmish campground ringed by white picket fences 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Sturgis! In 1871, due to railroad construction through town center along Depot Road right up to where looping Depot Boulevard meets State Street, much growth ceased until natural disasters such as floods or fires ripped through townships further south during 1906-07 General strike/Depot Riot; however many residents chose to return home following these events while others relocated permanently to nearby cities or rural areas elsewhere within Michigan! With increased immigration from eastern Canada during World War II Russian refugees arrived beginning in 1942 followed by increasingly large numbers coming after 1945 due to war effort shortages caused by both world wars combined with tight agricultural production quotas set by President Franklin D Roosevelt; all together some 45,000 people moved into Sturgis between 1940-1945!! After years of steady growth rate culminating with 2000 Census when population reached 4,837 souls (+438 since 2000), current economic conditions have led to declines especially among low income individuals registered herein (-1% YoY), loss of jobs (-2% YoY) & modest population growth (-0.7% YoY). However recent initiatives such as formation/participation in NationalHistoricalParkDistrict & restoration/maintenance (ongoing?)ofOriginalFortShelby make hope for resurgence & long term stability despite challenges!!
On July 4, 1867, the first annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally took place in nearby Clearwater. The event was organized by Augustus Thorp and attracted hundreds of motorcycles from around the country. The rally is considered to be one of the earliest motorcycle rallies.
