What followed next is still remembered by many as one of America's most famous outdoor camping experiences: they set up camp at night under the stars near mile marker 9 on US Highway 20 outside present day Sturgis. There they cooked hot dogs and hamburgers for themselves and shared stories until morning when they started marching eastward towards Buffalo National Park which lay ahead on their journey. What followed were someofthe roughest days ever experienced by any group of humans or animals traveling outdoors together: water levels were high enough so that even though they stopped frequently for drink or rest, each evening found them surrounded byandruneous landscape; temperatures reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit during some parts of the trip; insects constantly plagued them with stings; but worst of all was hunger: no matter how often they stopped for food or rested hematomas began forming around their eyes from dehydration from lack of hydration; finally after about seventy miles into their journey Andrew Jackson succumbed to his heat stroke while leading the remaining party back to civilization in nearby Isabella Island late that nightfall).
