The discovery opened up many opportunities for settlers as this area had been relatively undiscovered until then. The town was founded on July 4th, 1871 by local farmers and businessmen who saw an opportunity to create a commercial center on the banks of the river where they could sell goods such as flour and cattle products to travelers passing through the region at that time. The early residents were poor men and women who had nothing else to do with their days other than farm what little land they had available. However, thanks to hard work and dedication by these early colonists, Sturgis quickly became known as one of America’s most prosperous towns during its early years. Through much difficult times including natural disasters such as floods which destroyed crops and homes in 1937 and 1938, Sturgis persevered despite its challenges; this type of resilience is typical of Midwestern residents at that time. In fact, many people today still refer to themselves as “Sturgeons” due to how successful they have been at remaining independent both politically and economically throughout their history!
