Sterling Heights, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It lies on the San Francisco Peninsula on the Detroit River, about 20 miles (32 km) west of downtown Detroit. The other large city to be located within its boundaries is Dearborn, which is also on the peninsula but has a much different history and demographics. The area that now makes up Sterling Heights was first settled by French traders and fur traders in 1796 as part of Pontiac County. In 1803, it became part of Washtenaw County and saw some early development as a shipping point for goods moving from Lake Huron to Detroit via Canandaigua Harbor. By 1810, however, settlement had spread out into what is now Sterling Heights due to land grants from Governor John Denny and other wealthy men in this area including Augustus McCarty Sr., who donated 3 square miles (8 km2) north of today's downtown for "the erection of an Academy or University". By 1830, when it organized as a town under the name "Harrison", it had grown sufficiently that James Kappelmeyer purchased 40 acres (16 ha), east of Harrison Avenue/Highway 26*,[1] making it one of three townships included within what would become Oakland County.[2] In 1835, Sterling Heights voted to secede from Washtenaw County over differences with then-Governor Antoine Van Buren over items such as higher taxes and voting rights for Native Americans living within its borders [3] . The following year they entered into an agreement with neighboring Dearborn which lasted until 1863 when their township became part of Wayne Township[4]. Since then there have been many mergers between various local government bodies; most recently in 2001 when Highland Park incorporation occurred effective immediately upon merger between two municipalities: Southfield Township and Hamtramck Township[5]. Incorporation creates new police districts throughoutOaklandCounty while still keeping certain old district boundaries intact; these include parts adjoining Highland Park such as Midtown East & West Village locations which are currently served by Telegraph Road Police District #3 instead because those areas were annexed by Southfield Township outside OFD jurisdiction during the2001 merge process
