Sterling Heights is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Sterling Heights is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what would become Sterling Heights were farmers and their families who arrived in 1836 from Springboro Township, Pennsylvania. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Sterling Heights Village. In 1840, they organized as a village and developed a market economy based on farming and trading with other villages in the region. In 1870, after three years of debate over whether to secede from Wayne County or stay within it, the residents of Sterling Heights voted to secede and form their own municipality. The new township was named for General George Washington Steele (1792-1865), who had served as an officer under Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and then helped organize Dodge City into a city before returning to America to serve as its first mayor. At that time, Michigan was still ruled by Britain; when General Steele died without children to succeed him, his nephew became acting governor until he could be nominated by Congress. In 1871-72, General Steele's widow donated land east of downtown to create what would become Lansingoodle Drive; this donation placed Lansing Township immediately north of downtown where it remains today while Sterling Heights takes up space between them across Woodward Avenue (now I-96). As more people moved into town – including Methodists who established Beacon Baptist Church in 1875 – commercial development boomed around Lake Street between West Grand Boulevard and State Street (formerly US-31). Businessmen such as Jens Hagenbeck erected hotels and restaurants along Lake Street while also building houses for themselves near Woodward Avenue (now MLK Jr.'s Boulevard). By 1920 there had been over fifty buildings on Waterfront Drive alone; today only two remain: One house built in 1904 by banker Wm II Pritzker for his daughter Mabel Copley Pritzker Dickstein (), now used as offices for her business empire known as Dickstein Properties LLC., and another house which served as home base for baseball great Lou Gehrig () from 1922 through 1939 (). A major fire destroyed many businesses along Main Street between Union Station Road/Waterfront Drive/Lake Street in 1926 but did not damage any homes; this event has been called "the great fire" because it caused little physical damage to most buildings remaining today despite being one of the largest single firesever recorded in Metro Detroit (). Another major fire struck central business district at 6 p.m., November 25th 1915 destroying most of Dearborn House south side along Cass Corridor - becoming known locally as “the Great Fire” - leaving behindnesterday morning an area nearly twice sizeable with extensive burns taking place mainly below ground level where Liberty Mutual Insurance Company Building once stood . Many structures collapsed following this intense blaze which killed 10 people mostly firefighters

In 1892, the village moved to its present site on the south side of Brighton Avenue just east of I-75/M-1, becoming one of the largest cities in Wayne County by land area. The city's growth continued through World War II: during that time, Sterling Heights became home to two U.S factories producing munitions: Ford Motor Company's Dearborn plant on Westland Road and Krupp's Hamtramck plant on Nine Mile Road (now an industrial park). The war also led to increased development in downtown Sterling Heights;Today much of what once made up the business district around First National Bank now forms part of One Campus Martius University campus across from MetroCenter mall
