A national lead smelting company purchased land near present day downtown from Alexander Cassatt in 1836 and began producing lead ore from this site; production continued until 1840Consequently, sterling Heights became known as "Leadville". In 1871, a group of businessmen led by John Darnielle bought land east of downtown for $2 per acre (and renovated several buildings) to create what would become Darnielle Park; this park served as a model for later versions including Lawrence Park across the street and Detroit's Highland Park today. In 1886Darnielle donated part of his estate to be used as an experimental farm where people could learn how to raise crops withoutMachine Tools or pesticides which were then unavailable on large farms at that time In 1907Darnielle's widow gift 1/3rd of her estate (now called Belle Isle) to be used as a research station for agriculture leading to development around it such as University Drive today A movie theater was built on Belle Isle between 1912-13 by Finley Brothers who leased it from Mrs Darnielle which became known as "The Majestic" .It played movies until 1971 when it went bankrupt due largely to poor management

The population was over 100,000 in 2010 and it is the second most populous city in the metropolitan area after Detroit. Sterling Heights was founded in 1837 by James W. Sterling and John P. Richardson as a small agricultural settlement on the east side of Macomb River north of present-day Midtown Detroit. The name "Sterling" came from an early settler, Levi Stanton, who purchased land on what later became Sterling Heights from General Anthony Wayne for $1 million in 1836. In 1881, it became part of Wayne County and was duly incorporated as a city within that county on January 15th, 1898 under the name of "Detroit." It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its position as one of three major military production plants for the war effort - Allied Drive Casting Plant (ADCP), Marshall Aircraft plant (MAP) and Ford Motor Company's Dearborn plant (FORD). During peacetime, Sterling Heights has been home to many businesses such as Fox River Foods Inc., MI Today Children's Museum, Ohiopyle Township Community College District No 1 School District #2 school and numerous other businesses which have helped make it one of North America's top metropolises for economic development.
