In 1867 he bought an interest in the Armour & Co., Inc., which manufactured cannons for the Ulysses S Grant Expedition during the American Civil War and later made rifles for General James Longstreet's Confederate army during that conflict. In 1870 he merged with Armour & Co.—the largest business interests ever amalgamated by two men—to form Armour, Drysdale & Company (AD&C). AD&C continued manufacturing cannons through World War II but went out of business after that war; its assets were acquired by Henry Repeating Arms Company in 1951. In 1948 AD&C merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form United Steel Corporation (USCO). USCO continued manufacturing artillery until it merged with Raytheon plc to form Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Division on February 13, 1996; LockheedMartin remains a subsidiary of Raytheon today In 1923 Orville Wright flew his first powered airplane over Detroit while working on his multi-engine design at nearby Willow Run Airport; this event helped spur development of aviation within Muskegon County and away from Detroit Center Airport (now Wayne State University) where aircraft assembly began soon afterward – making way for what would become Sterling Heights proper as well as neighboring Battle Creek and Warren Park
