In 1836, two brothers - Augustus Kelley and Michael O’Brien - founded what would become one of America's leading shipyards: Kelley Brothers Boat Works on current site near downtown St ClairShores and built many vessels including steamboats such as "Cleveland". In 1846 General David Dixon decided to move the capital of United States from Philadelphia to Washington D C - this was done because he felt that New York City was becoming too congested for the country's growing population center During World War II there were three shipyards located in St ClairShores: Allis-Chalmers Shipbuilding Company produced torpedo boats (US Navy), Bethlehem Steel manufactured Aircraft Parts (USAAF) and Smith & Wesson Manufacturing Corporation produced pistols ( US Army). In 1812, the area now known as St. Clair Shores was part of the Creek Nation. In 1814, Native Americans from Illinois built a cabin on the banks of the Maumee River. The first white person to live in what is now St. Clair Shores was Captain John Fitch, who used his ship “Finch” to transport goods across the river to Fort Dearborn. In 1816, Fitch founded a trading post at present-day Erie Canal Landing and sold merchandise including lumber and whiskey to traders in Ohio and Canada. In 1821, General David Birney's army invaded Michigan Territory and captured Detroit; this event signaled the end of Indian rule over much of central Michigan. In 1830, James Kapp founded Kapp's Mills in what is now downtown Lansing; this mill became one of the largest cotton mills in America. When American settlers arrived in northwestern Michigan in the late 1800s they found an area that was rich with mineral resources such as coal and gold (the region is still called "Golconda".). Five different people were responsible for developing these resources: James Timberlake, George Stephenson, Nicholas Negus, Amos Kendall and Daniel Goodwin - each with their own individual innovations and successes that have helped make today's town named after them possible: Flint Street (named for Nicholas Negus), Enterprise Avenue (named for George Stephenson), Isabella Street (named for Amos Kendall) and Pioneer Place (named for Daniel Goodwin).
