The town grew rapidly due to its location near transportation connections and its access to natural resources such as watermelons, apples, lumber and coalitions were formed early on in its history. By 1917, St. Clair Shores had developed into one of Michigan's largest statistical towns with a population over 1,000 people living in areas annexed by the community during that decade alone including portions of Dearborn Heights and Southfield Township (now Sterling Heights). In 1957-1958, during World War II service members from nearby Camp Traverse founded Saint Clare's Military Reservation which remains an active military facility today withinStClairShores limits

In 1979, Grumman Corporation closed its Alcoa plant in nearby Bay City which eliminated much of the city's jobs and left St. Clair Shores with a smaller economy but larger number of residents who still rely on manufacturing and services that support it such as retail businesses and restaurants
The town of St. Clair Shores, Michigan was founded by James Fenton in 1836. The first post office opened in 1837 and the town grew rapidly from its initial population of twelve to over one hundred residents by 1850. The townsite was purchased by the state in 1855 and became a part of Lansing Township. In 1907, the town was named for General John J. Pershing and it has since been an important center for military recruitment within the Great Lakes region.
