The town site was chosen for its convenient location on peninsula between two small rivers - Huron and Wabasha - making it an ideal place to build homes and establish businesses along both banks of these riverside waterways which would provide access to crucial trade routes essential for economic development early in this century. The first permanent white settlement in St. Clair Shores was a group of 1800 settlers who arrived in 1817 from the port of New York. The town was named for General John Fenton, who had donated land to the town. On December 12, 1837, the Town of St. Clair Shores was organized with a population of about 140 people. In 1840, a post office was established and the name changed to Shores after the bay where it sat. The town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population of over 350 people. A school was built in 1851 and by 1865 it had become an high school which would continue to be operated until 1982. In 1870, residents voted to unify their towns into one entity and this decision led to the name change back to St. Clair Shores on July 1, 1972
