The community was named for General James St. Clair, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans who was later killed in battle. In 1875, a group of businessmen led by George Haggerty purchased 1,500 acres north of modern-day St. Clair Shores and founded what is now Mio Motorsports Park. The company built a race track on the land that would become one of America's most popular motorsports events - The Grand Prix at Mio Raceway. In 1978, Mio racetrack closed after only three years due to increasing competition from other venues in Michigan and Illinois. However, it reopened as Midway Airport in 1982 and has been hosting aviation events ever since! Today, St. Clair Shores is an active center for commerce with several high-rise buildings along Main Street downtown including The First National Bank (founded 1870), Sears Tower (1939), A&P supermarket (1962), and Kmart store (1987). There are also several small businesses dotting the streetsides including: Old Fashioned Ice cream & Coffeehouse (established 1948), American Legion Post 927 (established 1918), Chinese Community Center(opened 1974), music venue called "The Place" which opened in 1984 and hosts local concerts every summer season as well as annual carnival operations such as petting zoos/fairs/games etc., while numerous restaurants offer both local cuisine and international fare - making it one of America's most vibrant communities!
The area now known as St. Clair Shores, Michigan was settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the 17th century. The first European to arrive in what is now St. Clair Shores was Jean Baptiste Point du Hoc, who built a fur trading post on the Rouge River in 1673. Other early settlers included Pierre Duguay and his brother Étienne Duguay de la Falaise. In 1812, John C. Frémont explored and mapped what is now Michigan Territory and named it for General James K. Polk, who had been President of the United States at the time. In 1813, Simon Cameron began irrigating land near present-day Cadillac through Purchase Creek and called it Crystal City after one of his daughters from a previous marriage. In 1814, a group of French Canadian Troops under Captain François Legault invaded Canada and captured Fort Mackinac on July 4th where they stored supplies before retreating back to their base at Detroit). On October 15th,1814, during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America, American forces destroyed part of Fort Mackinac which may have led to its later reestablishment as an military fortification on Lansing Peninsula northwest of town center
