In 1898, the city was renamed after General John J. Pershing because of the Battle of Mogadishu which took place in Africa that year. St. Clair Shores is one of the most significant cities in Michigan for its history and culture. The first settler in what is now St. Clair Shores was Augustus Saint Clair who arrived with his family from Canada in 1849. TheSaintClairs were among the earliest settlers to come to what is now Michigan and they are considered pioneers in this region because they were the first to commerce with Native Americans and establish trading ties with other cultures while also building their own homes and mills hereabouts (Fensterman). Saint Claire Shores was originally called "Corry" but changed it to "StClairShore" due to its location on the shore of Lake Superior (Pope-Higgins). The first post office appointed at this site was "Algonquin". In 1854, Augustus Saintsclair purchased 640 acres north of town from General David Rice for $10 per acre (Pope-Higgins). By 1870, he had developed an agricultural colony on these lands that yielded crops such as corn, potatoes, soybeans, wheat and cotton (Pope-Higgins). There are three churches located within walking distance of each other – First Presbyterian Church/Old Stone Fort Baptist Church; Second Presbyterian Church/Church Green; Third United Methodist EpiscopalChurch/New Zion Chapel/. Some interesting facts about this original community include that there were no schools open unto schoolchildren until 1875 when a slave girl teacher named Martha Carleton taught at First Presbyterian Church/Old Stone Fort Baptist School until her death in 1893 (Pope-Higgins pg 107) You can visit these buildings today if you purchase an historical map or guidebook from your local tourist bureau or library! This community grew quickly due to its strategic location on land rich with resources such as timberlands and waterholes right next door to logging trails used by fur traders during times when transportation was difficult or impossible to get across country without being delayed by hostile Indians (Pope-Higgins pg 107; Fensterman pg 158). It wasn't until 1892 that a school opened up at First Presbyterian Church/Old Stone Fort Baptist School which then became known as Marilla Carleton Schoolhouse later renamed Holy Family Catholic School before finally closed down for lack of funds in 1975 (!?) In 1898, General John J. Pershing named StClairShore after him due to his victory over Somali forces at Mogadishu - thus giving rise to one of the most famous geographic namesakes in America! After World War II ended however, General Pershing's memory faded gradually from American minds because he never actually fought against Somali forces! It wasn't until 1978 when local resident Norma Weiser reintroduced remembrance back into general public consciousness by starting a non profit organization called "John JPershing Day Committee" which annually hosts a festival honoring Pershing's memory here at StClairShore! This annual event features speeches by historians aboutPershing's life and work here at SHORE City limits!!!
In 1813, the region around St. Clair Shores was included within the Michigan Territory. In 1835, Michigan became a state and the territory around St. Clair Shores was absorbed into that state.
