In 1834, three brothers named John, Peter, and George St. Clair founded the town of St. Clair Shores in Michigan Territory. The first store was built on the corner of Highways 17 and 24. The town rapidly grew and by 1840 had a population of over 140 people. In 1841, the Shores family donated land to build a school in the town. On July 4th, 1845, students from the school founded a local park in honor of their benefactor, Father Edward Bracegirdle (1807-1892). The town's growth continued through the years until it reached its peak in 1860 with a population of 530 people. However, during the Civil War (1861-1865), many residents left for military service because of the war effort. By 1865, however, St. Clair Shores had shrunk to just 60 people again due to loss of trade and industry as well as natural disaster such as devastating floods that destroyed most homes and businesses in 1862-63. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 with no end to slavery in America, many African Americans moved into what is now Detroit while some remaining white citizens relocated to other parts of Michigan Territory or Ohio USA. In 1907-1908 major renovations were made to our current high school building which included new classrooms and an enlargement of commons area which includes a large gymnasium/hallway/parking lot used today by both staff and student athletes from nearby schools includingDearborn Heights High School (to our north) as well as Eastern Michigan University's DeVos Center Campus located on Woodward Avenue immediately south of our old high school site where we currently have reserved bleachers for future soccer games played at our new stadium! The renovated building also featured new plumbing systems including central hot water system and modern ventilating systems which allowed us to host events such as state championships basketball games without worrying about smoke or heat coming from individual rooms! Our current athletic director is Mrs Patsy Neuman who has led our team since 1998 when her predecessor resigned after 8 ½ years! We are one very happy community - thank you for being part of us!

In 1812, as part of Treaty No., Great Britain ceded ownership of all land west of Ottawa to US President James Kappegee; St. Clair Shores became US territory under this treaty. In 1815, local resident David Dixon erected a log cabin near what is now downtown StClairShores with plans to start an agricultural colony; however, Dixon's venture failed because there was no water available for irrigation purposes and he did not have much success raising crops other than corn until1826 when he found an underground stream that could be used for irrigation purposes In 1834, Isaac Stevens constructed a small sawmill over an old gristmill discovered by him while exploring northwest Michigan waters off Mackinac Island; it became operational one year later but closed due to lack of customers In 1862, local resident George Wright donated land for construction of a school which opened for instruction in 1865 In 1898-1900 Jens Jensen designed and built new brick buildings at 116 Main Street which housed the first high school in Monroe County In 1912-1913 John Fuhrman developed an experimental gas station/ travel agency at 301 Saginaw Road which became known as The Fuhrer Store
In 1807, the first white settler in what is now St. Clair Shores was John McLaughlin. He and his family built a cabin on the present-day site of their current house. The town was platted in 1809 and named for General James Fenton, who had fought in the War of 1812. In 1825, a post office was established in the town and remains open to this day. The town became a village in 1836 and incorporated as a city in 1907.
