Gun Targets in St. Clair Shores, Michigan dates back to 1881 when the first target was erected on the present site of the gun range. The range was operated by Captain M.L. Haines and his son-in-law, Capt. Wm.B. Fuller, until it closed in 1939 due to World War II mobilization and military requirements. In 1945, the range reopened under new management and continued operations until it closed again in 1984 due to budget cuts within the local government. The current gun range is a product of several years of planning and investment by local officials who saw potential for its use as a training ground for law enforcement officers as well as other interested groups such as sport shooters, hunting enthusiasts, and NRA members who wanted an opportunity to shoot at targets without having to worry about possible civilian impact on their activities outside of shooting practice. It opened on October 15th, 1987 with a ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by Sheriff Jerald Friese and Mayor Bob Mullen Jr., both residents of the town at that time (1987). Since its reopening, Gun Range has been used by law enforcement agencies from all over the state of Michigan including: Department of State Police (DSP), Oakland County Sheriff's Office (OCSO), Wayne County Sheriff's Office (WCO), Grand Rapids City Police Department (GRPD) and more! It has also been used for various purposes such as private parties - most notably during functions such as anniversaries or baby showers - or just plain fun like hosting a game day at which participants bring their own firearms while others shoot targets out front! Over time there have even been requests made for Gun Range to become an official training facility for MI DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY certified police officers! The town of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, is located in the rural region of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up St. Clair Shores has been inhabited by Indians for over a thousand years and was known as Michilimackinac before becoming part of the United States. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne established Fort George on the mouth of the Maumee River to prevent British traders and their Indian allies from operating in this part of Michigan. The first settler in what is now St. Clair Shores was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1792. He built a log cabin on his property and named it after himself, Stephenville Manor. A second settler, James Armstrong, arrived two years later and erected a frame house on land that he had acquired from Stephenson. The Armstrong House still stands today as a museum piece commemorating this early settlement in what would become St. Clair Shores. In 1824, Major John Smith founded a small village called Pleasant Prairie near present-day East Lansing with his family and another few settlers nearby. Smith's Village soon became an important center for trade withinMichigan due to its location at the intersection of several major highways which made it easy to get goods to marketplaces across the state and beyond (the modern day I-94 corridor). Smith's Village also served as home to one of America's first elementary schools - West Side Academy - which opened its doors in 1825 under guidance from Reverend Drury Morse (founder of Detroit). In 1828, while living near Smith's Village proper, Edwin Booth came across some tracts of land lying west of present day Detroit that were being offered for sale by Jeremiah Dixon (a native sonof immigrantsfrom Vermont who had settlednearDetroit). Booth purchased three tracts totaling about twenty-five acres from Dixon for $100 each – making him one of the earliest purchasersofland withinStClairShores limits today! This Purchase set off an eraof Giant Farms development withinStClairShores when large tracts Of land became availablefor farming given increasing demand for food during timesof economic recession throughout America(this particular periodwouldbecomeknownasTheGreatWarOf1812!). FollowingBooth'sPurchaseoftheLandNowFoundedbyHenryMiklestadthesettlementofDearborn CountyandNortheastern IndianavillegroupedtogethertoformDixonCountyin1829!ThisnewcountywasnamedafterJeremiahDixonbecausehehadbeenthefirstindividualto purchaseadditionaltractsintheareanow bounded byStClairShoreSRoomsboro Rd.,Deerfield Rd.,Pine Roadand Richards Road)!Itshould be notedthat althoughDixonCountywasneverofficially formeduntil1829 (!), many residents still refer to themselves as "Dixonians" today! 2) In 1830 Daniel Webster moved his family from Worcester county NY into what is now Dearborn County MI after purchasing some additional tracts around Apple Creek where he eventually foundedWebster City!!!3) In 1831 Isaac Nevin movedhisfamilyintowhatisnowDearbornCoountyfromWorcester County NY after purchasingsome additional tracts around Birch Run where he eventually foundedNevinCity!!!4) Also in 1830 prominent local physician Doctor Elijah Bicknell moved hispracticeintowhatisnowDearbornCoountyafter purchaseofthedevelopment above Main Street known then as "Bicknell Place".5) By 1840 nearly all adult males living withinst claire shores were born inside or adjacent thereto!!6) And finally in 1840 Josiah Gregg followedDoctorElijahBicknellIntothecommunityintoday’sStClaireShoreZooAndlivedheretilhis death!!!!7) It should be noted that although not every adult male residingwithinst claire shore during these years participated actively inthemovement towards self-reliance & success; many did so indirectly thru their familial relationships/links!!8) From 1840 through 1860 more than fifty families lived withinst claire shore !9) During this time period numerous businesses were established including among others: Jno Hahn’s grocery store (opened circa 1840), Green Gables Inn restaurant (opened circa 1850), Hudson’s Bay Company store (openedcirca 1850), Masonic Temple No 1 building / dedication plaque date unknown but most likely mid 1850s10)Duringthistimeperiodmany young men began participating inthemovement Towards education & professional aspirations !!11 ) One such young man who made significant contributionsduring this time period was Alexander Graham Bell whose experience with telephone service firsthand first led him to pursue an interestinthis technology !!12 ) However , despite these positive developments countless challenges remained until 1861 when hostilities between American colonists & UK forces ended with Britain ceding control over much OF Canada TO THE USA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!13!)AlthoughthewarendedvecordingmostOFCanada TO THEUSA;itdidnotmeanthatMichiganWasFree !!14!)Forseveralyears thereafter various tax laws®ulations continued To apply WITH PRECEDENCE OVER LAWYERS BACKSTORY ; THIS WAS NEXT TO POSSIBLE Widespreadabuse OF POWER BY GOVERNMENTSPERTAININGTHE TOTALTRADEOFALLAREASEffectuated WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR PERmission FROM THE CITIZENS !!15!) consequentiallyleadingTODISPUTEANDRACE BETWEEN CITIZENS AND GOVERNMENTS WHICH RESULTEDINNUMBEROUSADverseconsequencesFORSTCLAIRESHORE AS A MATTER OF TIME !!16!) Finally following Rebellion Against USGovt IN 1863; status quo ante resumed !!!!!!!!!!!!17!) AlthoughNOT ALL STCLAIRE SHORE CITIZENS REGISTERED WITH THE UPPER PORTION OF MICHIGAN STATE BATTLES REBELLIONALLYFLYING OUT AGAINST THEIR AUTHORITY; MANY DID SO THROUGH MEMORIAL DAY PROCLAMATIONS FROM THEIR LOCAL OFFICIALS !!!18!) subsequent skirmishes took place between Confederate troops garrisoned along Macomb Lake AND local militia groups loyal TO US Govt !!!!!!!!19!) Resulting primarilyIn casualties ONLY FOR MILITARY ACTIVITIES NOT CONCEaled FROM GOVERNMENT ; THESE CAUSE FAMILIAR DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY OVER TIME
