The first European to visit what is now St. Clair Shores was Nicholas Detroit on July 4, 1795 while he and his crew were exploring the lower Great Lakes region for new sites for a French colony. Detroit named the area "Isabella" after one of his daughters who accompanied him on that trip. The first post office in St. Clair Shores was established in 1824 by Jno Worthy and Cushman & Wakefield merchants from Chicago as part of the expanding US postal system during the Jacksonian era of American politics and government development. In 1837, John Anderton purchased land east of present-day downtown from David Sibley for $1,000 cash and built an Inn on Main Street which became known as Anderton's Hotel until it burned down in 1917 at which time it was replaced by the current structure on Main Street called The First Methodist Church (later renamed First Congregational). In 1861, local farmer George Washington Snyder constructed a sawmill onriver just north of present day downtown along with two other mills soon followed by others along the river valley until all ten were operating commercially within five years due to Snyder's innovative business practices and perseverance when other entrepreneurs either failed or abandoned similar ventures because they could not duplicate Snyder's success story - including Augustus Kelley who organized Michigan's first diesel engine factory near Dexter about twelve miles upstream from St. Clair Shores circa 1922). By 1899 there were over seventy businesses operating in town with a population total exceeding 1,500 people; this growth continued until World War II when commercial establishments closed or moved away due to wartime shortages or changes in economic conditions throughout America caused by war production difficulties; however some residents continued to operate small businesses such as blacksmithing and printing until those operations were discontinued following hostilities ended in 1945..
