settled in St. Clair Shores Township in 1836, the first post office was established in 1841, and the first store was built in 1851. The township became a part of Michigan in 1907. The township had four schools until it closed down due to budget cuts during the Great Depression. In 1945, the township reopened with eight schools. In 1975, the Township Board passed a resolution to name the park after Sheriff James A. Fitzpatrick of St Clair Shores Township who died that year at age 92. In 1978, an ordinance was passed allowing handguns on township property which has been amended three times since then and is still being debated by residents and board members today about how to protect against crime on their streets and properties without infringing on Second Amendment rights of those living within the township limits. Other proposals include increasing funding for police officers who can better prevent shootings, increasing access to mental health resources for shooters victims/survivors, expanding background checks on all buyers before they ever purchase a firearm, and mandating female firearm owners present when buying a weapon
