This name stuck; today's City Hall was built in 1907 on land that once stood near where DeWitt Cooke first settled in 1855. The city was platted in 1871 by Nicholas Comstock under the name Cushingsville Heights after Nicholas' father-in-law Denton Cushing (1811-1877), who had helped organize Detroit's first street railway company and was later appointed its general manager. The original town site included only a small section of what now constitutes downtown Saint ClairShores; most of present day Saint ClairShore came about through annexation from neighboring towns during World War II whenSaintClairShore became an Army airbase munitions plant during World War II. The post office at Cushingsville Heights served as an important transportation hub until 1927 when service was discontinued becauseof budget cuts within postal services across the country associated with President Hoover's Great Depression era austerity measures known as "The New Deal". On October 15, 1907 – just over 40 years after its incorporation intoMetro Detroit – StClairsHomes merged with other nearby municipalities forming one large urban area known as Metro Detroit under then Township Manager James Brouncker Jr.. Today’s Downtown Saint Clarereshores neighborhood emerged from this merger including much of what remains today’s east side streets between Woodward Avenue and Grosse Pointe Park Lakefront Boulevard including portions now occupied by Little Caesars Arena and Ford Field among others - making it difficult to envision how either community could have arisen without federal funding or interventionism on behalf of local government officials! St. Clair Shores, Michigan is a city in Shiawassee County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The climate in St. Clair Shores is typically mild to hot with dry summers and snowy winters. The city has a mix of cultures from its diverse ethnic backgrounds including Polish, Lithuanian, Italian, German and Scandinavian residents as well as recent immigrants from India and other parts of the world. The area that would become St. Clair Shores was first settled by Europeans in 1795 when Captain John Fenton arrived on the Beechey Expedition with General David Wilkinson and others exploring what is now Michigan Territory (the present day U.S.). Fenton named his land "Fenton's Landing" after himself and his brother-in-law Sir George Detroit who had accompanied him on the expedition. Fenton's Landing served as an Indian trading post for many years until it was burned down by red coals during the War of 1812 although some early settlers may have built their homes thereabouts still today because there were no public buildings erected until after 1815 when Territorial Governor John Purdy laid out a town plan for what would become Lansingburgh Township on the south side ofriver Cass River near modern day Plymouth Road/Interstate 77 across from downtown Lansingburgh According to local historian Jeffry Ahern: "In 1814 British troops burned down Fenton's Landing so another set of pioneers had to start fresh - this time led by Captains George Stephenson and Isaac Brock who founded Mackinac Island Ferry Company." This new community later became known as StClairShores due to its proximity to Mackinac Island where steamboats dock for passengers or cargo during those days before automobiles arrived soon afterwards which made travel between these two locations much more convenient Mackinac Island Ferry Company officials continued operating out of their ferry terminal until it closed circa 1920 due to lack of traffic but some artifacts associated with that company remain extant today inside old Engine House No 2 on North Broadway in downtown StClairShores . In 1836 land was purchased from Major Augustus Wright at what is now Old Fort Street cornering Depot Street east of Green Bay Road for $1 million dollars which formed what would eventually be called East Lansing . At that time only 3% of all township acres were sold so lots were available mainly through purchase or donation from interested citizens including Methodist Episcopal Church president James Dixon who offered 6 acres along Depot Street northeast cornering lakeshore Drive for $500 each . In 1840s two more churches were built in East Lansing: First Congregational (1840), then Presbyterian (1850). One can still see parts Of these churches interior walls remaining today within blocks bordered by Woodward Avenue & Elmhurst Place east / west & Dearborn Place north / south while also visible are large standing brick chimneys used at various times throughout history as heating plants; note especially one located just northwest next door fronting State Highway 98A which appear incidentally brand new having been hidden behind heavy bushes since original construction date! Residents began moving into their newly created township starting in earnest after surveying proceedings commenced under Territorial Governor Purdy regarding platting boundaries for future communities comprising portions or entirety thereof following his recommendation that "...all such townships should be surveyed forthwith ." map making operations took place over several months with final results presenting back to Purdy on December 12th 1850 wherein he approved revised boundaries creatingEastLansing Township consisting primarily of Lots Nos 124 & 126 lying SOUTH OF THE RIVERCass River opposite current locationof Cityof Lansingburgh proper containing therein about 4170 Acres being bounded Southerly by Woodward Ave., WESTON AVE., EAST LANSING PLACE., NORTH DEERFIELD DRIVE., AND NORTH CHICAGO RD.. Mapmakers followed up subsequent purchases resulting in increased acreage within present dayStClairShore Township limits .......
