The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Michigan were French fur traders, who landed in the area in the early 18th century. The area was part of the Great Lakes region and was home to a number of Native American nations. In 1795, British troops burned down the Chatamichigan Fort while occupying Detroit. This event led to a series of clashes between the United States and Great Britain over control of these regions. The Treaty of Greenville was signed on July 16, 1795, ending this struggle and creating an alliance between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty also recognized both sides' rights to trade with each other.
