St. Clair Shores is a city in St. Clair County, Michigan, United States. The population was 12,868 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. It is the largest and most populous city within the Oakland County metropolitan area. The history of St. Clair Shores can be traced back to 1824 when two brothers, John and Peter Shores, founded what would become the town of Shores on the Rouge River in present-day St. Clair Shores Township. In 1833, they laid out a new village on land that they had acquired from Ottawa trader John Ahern and his family (the first Europeans to live there). They named their town after General James Wilkinson who had beenilitary general during the American Revolution and also served as president of Michigan Territory from 1795 to 1800. In 1835, Peter Shores donated 160 acres (70 ha) of land near today's downtown for a public square which became known as "Pete's Square." The townspeople built a courthouse and schoolhouse on this square in 1836; it remained in use until 1840 when it was replaced by the current Courthouse Annex building which now stands on Third Street SE in downtown St. ClairShore. In 1846, were opened up much of what are now eastern Allegany Township into newly organized Macomb County; however, all development outside Northwestern Macomb Township stopped until 1860 when township boundaries were redrawn following advances in railroad technology and other factors - thereby creating southeastern Wayne Township including present day downtown StClairShore proper with its own post office (opened May 4th 1870) south of Third Street SE between Woodward Avenue NW and State Road 725 east of I-75W/US-1A (and adjacent parts of Hayward Village northward along Woodward Avenue NW). On November 3rd 1850 residents voted 3 to 1 to secede from Macomb County due to dissatisfaction over high taxes levied by county officials while living within its borders but not having any say in government policy or decisions; this vote set off a long legal battle that ended with incorporation intoOakland County as early as December 6th 1850 under charter number 5586 from Houghton Mifflin Company via letter patent #5492 from Territorial Governor David Ransom Pontiac II... thus becoming one half section or borough within Oakland County - an event generally considered among local historians as marking "the opening up" or "opening up democracy" within Oakland County... Since incorporation oakland county has annexed many adjoining municipalities including Dearborn Heights annexation 1956 & Highland Park annexation 1970 followed by Mount Clemens 1980 & Clinton 2000 before finally taking full control over Downtown SaintClairshoure proper through reclamation efforts dated back to about 2006 complete with restoration/replacement/additionof several key historic buildings

The first white settlement in what is now St. Clair Shores was a small farming village called "Nappanee," located on the banks of the Ottawa River. Nappanee was founded by French traders in 1763, and grew to be a major community with a storehouse, mill, and other installations. The town had two churches, one of which was destroyed by fire in 1812; the second congregation moved to what is now Battle Creek after their building collapsed. In 1814, Nappanee's own post office was established and soon became an important center for mail transportation between Detroit and the surrounding region. By 1830, however, the town had shrunk to losing its importance as trade increased along the Grand River corridor. In 1833, local farmers beganODing land east of present-day Nappanee in what is now Midland County. They named their new township "St. Clair Shores" after General John Fetterman who had fought against Native Americans during the American Revolution and who later purchased land at this location for his family's military estate adjacent to Fort Wayne (now Indiana). The town quickly became a thriving commercial center with stores, housing developments, a school system, and mills that produced lumber and other goods. A courthouse/ jail were constructed here in 1835; due to instability caused by increasing population density and economic hardships throughout much of Michigan during this period of great change, no more schools or courtrooms were built until well into the 20th century. During World War II many residents left their homes for work on various fronts inside Great Britain or elsewhere in Europe; however many locals returned home once hostilities ceased (including St Clair Shores' mayor) after Victory Day 1945 when Japan surrendered unconditionally following World War II ended without any formal battlefield engagements taking place within its borders like those leading up to European war victory did four years earlier.. The Grosse Pointe Woods area annexed part of St Clair Shores Township effective July 1st 1959 making it one municipality governed under one governing body for all areas annexed since 1959 including Midland County as well as portions of Washtenaw County newly formed from part of Dearborn County on November 14th 1965 when that county merged with Oakland County .
