By 1865, most of what are now downtown St. ClairShores had been built up by people living near the docks where they worked loading ships with goods coming into Detroit for sale or use in other cities such as Cleveland or Toledo. In 1870s and 1880s many industrialists founded businesses here including General Electric Company (later GE), Ford Motor Company (later Ford) and Chrysler Corporation (later Chrysler). During World War II many industries closed down but new ones sprang up like Aluminum Foundry which developed into one of Michigan's largest employers today while steel production declined nationally because unionize
