The town took its name from General Allen Pritchard's brigade which landed at Ecorse Harbor on January 11, 1850 following attacks against Fort Dearborn by French forces under Napoleon III.; Canadian forces recaptured Fort Dearborn two days later and renamed it for General Pritchard; however, no post office operated at Ecorse for another dozen years because mail service between Detroit and Grand Rapids wasn't available until 1861 when it was established through route 66]. In 1916, St. Clair Shores became a municipality and it adopted its present name of Clairefontaine Township on November 8th of that year. On December 5th of that year, Belle Plaine Township was created within Clairefontaine Township and it took over responsibility for education within its boundaries. In 1949, Belle Plaine Township merged with Clairefontaine Township to form St. Clair Shores-Belle Plaine Township which still exists today as an independent municipality with its own government system and municipal library
