The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census.[1] The first settler in what became St. Clair Shores was John Hoadley, who platted the town in 1835. It grew rapidly because of its location close to transportation routes and its access to navigable water supplies. The town's proximity toDetroit made it an important commercial center for earlyMichigan settlers, and several stores and hotels were built there during the 1840s and 1850s. By 1860, St. Clair Shores had become an incorporated municipality with a population of over 10,000 people.[2] During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many residents served in the Union army as privates or officers; some also worked as farmers or mechanics while their homes were occupied by troops stationed in Michigan or elsewhere in the war effort. Many of these residents returned home after 1865 and continued to live here until their deaths; however, a few families remained living here until 2001 when they moved out into other townships surrounding St. Clair Shores.[3] In 1892, two brothers named George Wacker founded Wacker Paper Company near where today's Interstate 5 runs parallel to State Road 141 just north of town square; this company operated paper mills until 1958 when it closed down due to competition from other paper companies within Michigan and Wisconsin[4]. In 1926, local resident Averill Harriman donated land adjacent to his wooded lot at 313 Elm Street for use as a community park named after him which remains open today (Harriman Park).[5][6] In 1951, St .ClairShores High School opened,[7] which is now one of three high schools operating in neighboring Orion Township which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (the other two are Southfield Public Schools).[8][9] In 1984,[10], President Ronald Reagan visited StclairShores during his final days in office[11], setting off a large civic celebration that continues throughout August each year known as "Reagan Day".[12][13]

The city experienced rapid growth throughout the 1950s and 1960s through suburban development; however, during the late 1970s–early 1980s, economic fortunes began to decline as energy prices rose and manufacturing consolidation took place around countrywide
The first settlers in St. Clair Shores were several families who arrived in 1815. The Township of St. Clair Shores was organized on October 25, 1827 and the first election took place on November 3, 1827. The township had a population of only 12 residents when it was created. The first school was built in 1828 and the first post office opened in 1830. The town went through a lot of changes over the years including being renamed to Detroit in 1837, becoming an independent city within Michigan in 1895, and finally returning to its original name as Saint Clair Shores on December 15, 1912.
