Southgate, Michigan is a small town in the southcentral region of Michigan. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the western bank of the Shiawassee River and is bordered by Clinton Township to the north, East Grand Rapids to the east, and Battle Creek Township to thesouth. Southgate has been inhabited since prehistory. The first European settler in what would become Southgate was French trader Antoine de la Salle in 1701. He named it La Grange after his home in Normandy. In 1837, John Corder built a small log cabin near present-day downtown Southgate on land he had purchased from Jean Baptiste Point (1727-1802), one of Detroit's earliest pioneers and one of its most successful merchants. In 1839, Jens Aaby started selling groceries at his store which became known as "The White House." At this time there were only two stores in town and most people bought their groceries out of Africa or Asia because there were no refrigerators or other methods for packaging products then. In 1840, when Southgate withdrew from Benton County into Ottawa County, Michigan Territory under United States jurisdiction, it thereby lost all its commercial ties with Detroit and experienced rapid growth due to wagon traffic between that city and southern Upper Peninsula villages such as Ann Arbor (then called Alpena) and Sault Ste Marie (then called Michilimackinac). As a result of this change in economic fortunes many residents decided to move away from what became known as "the red light district" around downtown Southgate during prohibition times when alcohol was not allowed within three miles of any school or public building without a special permit from county authorities. Southgate is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 20,916 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Wayne County on M-8 and Interstate 94. The first European to visit Southgate was John Chapman in 1796, while exploring what is now northeastern Michigan along the Lower Peninsula route from Detroit to Ionia. In 1801, General Anthony Wayne founded Southgate Township in Wayne County and named it for himself because he had explored this area before his army pushed westward during the War for Independence against Great Britain. In 1814, James Kapp purchased land east of present-day Southgate from Chief Joseph Cotchett for $1,000 after finding evidence that a large Indian village existed thereabouts. On October 25, 1814, Kapp erected a log cabin near where he currently lives as Pioneer Cabin #2 in what is today's Southgate Township Park District (northwest corner of Main Street and East Avenue). The first post office at Southgate was established in 1816 with Wm Burt as its initial sender/receiver. The township was organized on December 1, 1840 under territorial government; it became an incorporated city on November 2nd of that year by an act of the Michigan Legislature under then-Governor Alfred Sibley (D). In 1861–1865, Union soldiers burned down several homes in town over munitions storage issues following the American Civil War; this event is generally considered to have started or aggravated local black community resentment towards white military personnel stationed nearby due to their dominance over most aspects life within town limits at that time. After the war ended many residents returned home but some remained behind due to offers from new settlers coming into territory then open to United States citizens including those from Ohio who were refugees fleeing Sherman's march through eastern Indiana intoMichigan Territory during 1863–64 campaign; these newcomers were known as "The Lost Cause". On May 5th 1865 Jno Trimble set out from Detroit with three horses carrying 113 pounds (51 kg)of salt pork weighing 10% more than normal carry weight for his trade called "Trimble's Saltpeter."
