Southgate, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the largest city east of Chicago and the second-largest city west ofDetroit, with a population of 80,591 as of 2010. The area that now makes up Southgate was once part of Tawas Township on the south side of Detroit County. On July 1, 1824, it became a part of what would become Oakland County and was named after itsthen-native owner, General John P. Marquette. In 1828, Southgate became an incorporated village and adopted a new name: "Southgate". The first scopes were built in Southgate by Samuel Fenton in 1829 and 1830 while he was working as one half-owner with his brother Edward Fenton at their father's estate at Desert Springs (now Parkland). Samuel had been told about an abandoned cabin north of town which he could purchase for $1 per acre (the amount then being worth about $4 per acre today). He began to build his first scopes there around this time and placed them on property belonging to his brother Edward Fenton until he acquired additional land near present day Telegraph Road and State Street in 1840. There are several interesting stories surrounding this early SCOPE construction including: One account suggests that when Sammy erected his first scope at Desert Springs, he received help from local Native American tribe members who helped him get the job done; another story claims that when Sammy erection went up against some tough opposition from local landowners - one group insisting that only white men be allowed to use firearms for hunting purposes -Sammy prevailed by erecting two huge wooden signposts bearing his own name directly opposite each other across State Street! This successfully demonstrated to these opponents that anyone possessing an accurate instrument could also hunt big game! A new courthouse was built in Southgate between 1851-1852 by contractor Isaac Nevin which cost $2100 plus labor costs; it seated 30 people inside with three rooms on the ground floor for storage plus loft space upstairs for offices. A few years later(1858), dirt roads were improved connecting various townships together so transportation became easier becoming necessary for larger meetings or events such as county fairs taking place outside cities during those days leading to more intense competition among communities vying for attention from potential customers/players! In 1927, Mack Trucks began shipping goods from their factory located on US-21/Mack Avenue to dealerships in nearby towns such as Sterling Heights and Midland Township. The company continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1984 after which time the land became available for development.
