The city of Southgate, Michigan was founded in 1836 by George Stephenson. The city was named for General John H. Southgate, a hero of the War of 1812 who fought at the Battle of Fort Dearborn. Southgate is a small, rural town in Calhoun County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ann Arbor–Muskegon-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Americans to arrive in what is now Southgate were probably French traders and fur traders who did business with the local Native American tribes. European exploration of what is now Michigan began in 1693 when Captain George Mackenzie explored the area from Canada. By 1701, fur traders had started trading with the Huron Indians and by 1706, British explorers had discovered significant amounts of silver and gold in what are now southeastern Michigan and northeastern Ohio. In 1807, James Kapp founded Kapp's Landing on the Muskegon River which became one of Southgate's most important commercial districts. In 1810–1811, Semmes built a cabin on a hill overlooking Southgate for his daughter Mina (1792-1862), widow of John Dibble (1768-1839). On July 4th, 1815 during the Mexican War, General Winfield Scott ordered Major Jacob Brownell to capture or kill Colonel Thomas Dearborn (1800-1871) while he was on his way to surrender at eXcalibur Creek near Detroit Heights east of downtown Ann Arbor. Dearborn had refused to disband his militia after Mexico’s victory over Napoleon Bonaparte in 1814 and continued to resist orders from Ulysses S. Grant to disarm his troops following their defeat at Buena Vista Creek near present day Mount Pleasant Township along Ionia Road west of Southgate; Dearborn was eventually captured and executed by order of Commodore Matthew Perry during his ill-fated expedition against Mexico City in 1847 despite protests from local residents including Mrs. Forde (1795-1860). The first post office established at Southgate was called "Herschel" after Captains John Herschel and David Dixon who landed there on July 9th 1800 with 300 pioneers as part of The Expedition led by Col.-Genl.-maj.(US Army) Harrison Gray Otis via Hiawatha Expedition under direction/command Maj.-Genl.-iss(US Army) Jesse Owens arriving Aug 10 th 1800 just before Battle Of Fallen Timbers & others land June 14 th 1800 On Oct 1 st 1800 “Aurora” Post Office opened With 0 inhabitants….
