In 1892, brothers Julius and Harry Oberdorf bought 510 acres southwest of present day Southgate Village from Ewing Kellett for $1 per acre ($10 per square mile). They began developing this land into what is now the downtown district including building several residences and churches along Wacker Drive between Maple Street and Gratiot Avenue beginning in 1893 before selling most or all their holdings in 1925 to Joseph Mitty Sr., patriarch of Mitty Brothers Farms Ltd., one of Coldwater's largest agricultural merchants at that time also owning more than 1,000 acres acrossMacomb County north of Battle Creek where he operated his farmsteads at North Road and Whitehall Road until his death in 1951. Mitty Brothers Farms continued to be run by descendants through 2006 when it sold its interests to Chrysler Corporation creatingthe first city owned housing development in Macomb County outside Detroit limits since then known as Chrysler Heights which has continued to grow ever since with new development announced every few years even as township growth slowed throughout much of recent decades due mainly to lack federal funding for redevelopment projects not only within Macomb but also across Wayne State University’s Beltline Campus area adjacent thereto .

Southgate, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the south shore of Lake Huron. The population was 1,580 at the 2010 census. Southgate is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom metropolitan area and is adjacent to Kalamazoo, MI. The first permanent settler in what became Southgate was James Worthy who arrived in 1795 from Pennsylvania and named it after himself, James Gaultney Southgate. On July 7, 1824, an act of the Michigan Legislature designated this tract as part of Mill Township within Washtenaw County for "the purpose of forming an agricultural township". This township was abolished by Charter Act No. 3 of 1908 when Washtenaw County was created as a result of statehood and its own creation west of Lansingburgh Road (now I-75). In 1861 Rev John Hickey organized a Methodist church in what would become Southgate with six members. In 1865 he donated land for a school which became used as the cornerstone for the current brick school building that stands today on Main Street near its original location on Green Bay Avenue in 1903. Reverend Hickey also donated money to build a new courthouse which opened in 1872 and still stands today on State Street northeast of town center beside its original location near present day Woodward Avenue (). In 1892 Kapp Brothers Coal Company began operations northwest corner lot just north-west side School house Road now known as US 132 across from South Gate High School; coal mine closed around 1929 Mr & Mrs Engelhard built home on lot next to old Kapp's Mine about 1910... later moved to their farmstead about 1915 where they remain until sold to family member by owner/operator unknown late 1960s or early 1970s
The first settlers in Southgate were German Jews who arrived in 1837. By 1849, the town had a population of about 50 people. The first school was built in 1852, and the first doctor was hired in 1861. Southgate became a village in 1903.
