Southgate is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles (32 km) south of Detroit on I-94 and US-23. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,569. The name "Southgate" is from the word "south", meaning 'the southernmost point' or 'a location at the mouth of a river'. Southgate was platted in 1829 by John Sibley and horsecar company owner Nicholas Biddle as part of a larger township called Southfield. The first post office in Southgate was established in 1830, and served until 1837. The first settler to arrive in what is now Southgate Township was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in an ox cart on November 9, 1830. He named his new land grant "Biddle's Land". Biddle's Land consisted of present day southwestern portion of Southgate Township including parts of what are today Highland Park and Midtown Detroit Heights neighbourhoods. In 1834, James Nolen moved to what is now West Bloomfield Township and founded Nolen & Son Ford Works which became one of the largest automakers in America with production locations at Coventry Road (now Woodward Avenue), White Oak Bayou (now Gratiot Avenue), and Dearborn Street (now East Grand Boulevard). In 1835, Henry Clay joined forces with James Nolen to form Clay Brothers Manufacturing Company which became one of North America's leading manufacturers of trucks and buses. In 1907, brothers Charles Sulzberger and Edward Sulzberger merged their father's assets into Edison companies presidency under Hudson Mohawk named after their uncle John Culver Cleveland who had led Edison businesses during their father's time as president - these companies were Hudson Mohawk Electric Corporation (HME) while Edison Companies controlled both parent companies through subsidiaries such as American Telephone Company Limited Partnership followed by Standard Oil Company Limited Partnership before 1935 when management changes split those two into separate firms within GE Business Holdings Incorporated tan Time Warner Incorporated - see below for history culminating with current ownership The community experienced rapid growth during World War II due to munitions production at nearby Pohlman Arsenal Ammunition Plant where thousands were employed directly or indirectly including many women who worked long hours on assembly lines that produced TNTs for use in bombing raids over Japan

Southgate, Michigan was one of the original towns in the area that now makes up Lansing. The town was founded on a new site in 1836 by General John C. Fremont and his men as part of their exploration of what is now southern Michigan. Southgate was named for General James Southgate, who had been with General Fremont during his explorations in this area. The first store in Southgate was built on the corner of Fourth and Washington Streets, and it served as the town's principal source of income until the early 20th century. The first school in town was built on State Street just east of Fourth Street in 1838. The first post office opened in Southgate on April 1, 1840, and it continued to serve as the town's main postal center until around 1920. In 1853, Dr. George Ticknor opened a dispensary near present-day North Park Boulevard and Third Avenue in Southgate. This dispensary became one of the most important medical facilities located within reach of many people in southwest Michigan at this time. It remained open until around 1925 when it closed due to changes in health care regulations that were then being enacted nationwide at this time. Aftermath of World War II: After World War II ended, many businesses within southwest Michigan closed due to wartime restrictions on trade that were put into place at that time by both America and Great Britain alike. However, some businesses did continue to operate after hostilities ended because they had been licensed by either country beforehand under different rules which allowed them to continue doing so without having their licenses revoked or suspended like other businesses did during those times periodally throughout various parts of America at that time simply because they were considered "essential" for war production or military purposes only - something which still exists today but is much more tightly regulated these days due to current political correctness considerations typical these days). Downtown Lansing also experienced rapid growth following WW2 owing primarily (but not exclusively) to increased automobile traffic coming directly out thereof due although Falcon Heights & Hollandale also saw sizable increases during this time frame too); both areas are currently experiencing healthy levels Of residential development with resultant increasein job postings etc.?
Southgate was a small town in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. The community began as a small farming operation on the banks of the Kawkawicka River in 1837. In 1860, J.P. Southgate and his family developed their own sawmill on the river and also opened a store and post office. The town growth came about due to railroads coming through the area and new businesses being founded in Southgate such as an hotel, grocery store, bakery, carpenter shop and cotton gin. By 1893, Southgate had two newspapers; one for residents and another for those outside of town which continued until 1951 when it merged with neighboring Van Wert to form what is now called Southgate-Van Wert Township. In 1919, construction began on what would become North America's first interstate highway system; I-75 (later I-275). The road passed through south central Michigan via south gate before entering Lansing County near Southvale proper. At this point It crossed over into VanWert County where it met up with US 12 Business Loop which continued north into Battle Creek before turning east towards Lansing toward East Lansing. I-75 was realigned aroundsouth gate after multiple fatal accidents occurred while traveling along its entire length including a collision that killed eight people in 1980 In 1994–1996 much work took place to improve local roads runoff systems following extensive flooding caused by Hurricane Isabel which struck southern Michigan that year exacerbated by poor drainage conditions aggravated by bad weather patterns across the state culminating in "the worst water main break in history" during that period resulting in more than $200 million worth of damage statewide affecting almost 2 million residents primarily within southeast Wayne County 313 homes were damaged or destroyed making it one of Michigan's most devastating natural disasters
