Southgate is a town in Monroe County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first settler in Southgate was John Fenton in 1837. A post office called Southgate was established in 1838, and remained in operation until1851. The township was organized on February 14, 1859. It became a city on November 2, 1898. In 2004, the population of Southgate were estimated to be 2,675.[1] In 1896 Saginaw-based company "A’s" began producing artificial turf for use at baseball stadiums throughout America; their products were known as Gator Grass or "Gator Treads". In 1907 the name change to "South Gate", due to its location near Saginaw's main gate from which all autos entered and left town. Grange Park (now called Southgate Community Park) was donated by Mrs. Jane Keyworth Waynforth and named after her son Harry Keyworth Waynforth who had been born there in 1893[2]. On October 15th 1909 during an annual meeting of Township Commissioners John Fenton requested that a committee be formed to study ways to improve drainage ditches emanating from Grange Park which caused flooding during heavy rains that year; this committee recommended enlarging and widening existing streets within the township boundary towards southland Avenue so as not to inundate Grange Park again during future storms On July 9th 1912 officers from Detroit Police Department arrived at Southgate School after receiving reports of disorderly conduct taking place on Canfield Road within the township boundaries between Detroit and Monroe Counties; when they discovered no such event took place they departed without arresting any individuals In 1916 two local men - Alonzo Dowling and George Wetherald - started manufacturing electrical wiring dynamos using hand tools at home while working for American Electric Works located just west of downtown Dearborn Heights; these dynamos would become known as "Detroit Edison".
