Southgate is a small, unincorporated community in Ionia County, Michigan, located on the east side of Southgate Lake. The community was founded by a group of pioneers in 1837 as the site of an Indian village. The post office was founded in 1860 and closed in 1870. The first settlers to Southgate were Levi Richardson and his family who arrived from Ohio in 1837. They built the first frame house on what is now Southgate Lake. A second home was erected by Richardson's son-in-law, John Prentice, northeast of present day Southgate Elementary School. It wasn't until 1840 that land around present day Southgate became available for settlement after being offered by James Wickersham at a bargain price. Wickersham had been appointed Collector of Customs for Ionia County and purchased several thousand acres (nearly all of which is now within the community) near downtown Lansing for $1 per acre. He sold it to Daniel Cushman and his brother Isaac Cushman for $3 per acre. The Cushmans began building their farmstead on what is now North Park Road about two miles north of where they lived originally and named it "South gate." It wasn't until 1845 when they moved into their new home that they realized they needed another name because there were no negative consequences associated with living near one's original name given that land remained uncultivated for years after purchase even though it lay adjacent to some valuable property beloved by both locals and newcomers alike! In 1850, Anna Jette Widmann came overland from Indiana with her husband George Widmann Jr., catching a stagecoach from Detroit to Saginaw on October 15th while travelling downriver en route to Mackinac Island during the final days of the Michigan Territory before becoming statehood on November 3rd following the admission of Michigan as a U.S. State! The widmann brothers acquired title to 640 acres (approximately), located just northeast/southwest of present-day Southgate, between Green Bay Road/northbound US Highway 61 east/west (the current border between Ionia County and Oakland County) and Whitefish Road/southbound US Highway 41 northwest/east (the current border between Ionia County and Wayne County). This area would come to be known as "The Farms" because many families operated large tracts or farms hereabouts directly or through partnerships including those mentioned above! From this outset there immediately appeared two neighbors: Peter Demarest along with his wife Catharine; pair who had also recently settled down south from New York City only weeks earlier via boat ride upriver from Saginaw Landing - Elijah Hoggs & his wife Sarah; another newcomer couple - Solomon Shaver & Martha Noyes - just across Whitefish River FROM THE FARMS OF PETER DEMAREST! North Park Rd./SR 7 served as their dividing line... so much so that numerous later road namesakes proceeded out(eastern) SR 7 away from today's centerline RD 9 just beyond milepost #7 due westward rounding SW cornering ridge onto improved rights conveyed Lots 10 & 11 owned by Widow Shaver almost touching Egg Harbor Township limits... thence SE 1 ½ mi NW along said lots boundary forming Township limits described hereinto Ft Dearborn aforesaid’; thus we have today's SR 9 running NE thru The Farms Rd./SR 7 intersection then SWNW past said intersection forming gated Community bounds described hereinto Ft Dearborn aforesaid'!!!
