Southgate is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. Southgate is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Muskegon County were French Outfitters who arrived in 1807 and named their new land "Fort Stoufford." They built a stockade on the east side of present-day Southgate and sold goods to Native Americans living along the Great Lakes region. In 1809, General John Ross discovered copper ore near what is now Southgate while exploring for a new route to the Pacific Ocean. This led to increased exploration and development around Southgate as interest in copper grew throughout North America. In 1824, Samuel Armstrong founded Armstrong's Trading Post onwhat is now southside of Main Street in what is today known as Armstrong Park. In 1830, he moved his post to where it stands today at what became known as First National Bank Square. By 1840, there were over 20 businesses located around First National Bank Square including grocery stores, blacksmiths, saddlers, harnessmakers and wagon workshops; all within easy walking distance of one another. In 1870, Jesse Hunt opened Hunt's Mercantile Store on current-day East Main Street which quickly became one of the most popular stores in town with customers from all over Muskegon County! Hunt was instrumental in helping drive away competition from other merchants starting with a store that could accommodate 8 customers! His store would remain open until 1958 when it closed due to changes intown business practices! By 1900 there were over 100 businesses operating throughout southside Little Belt Township including 7 banks (the last being Peoples State Bank), 3 hotels/motels (Four Points Inn & Suites by Hilton Hotel later called Renaissance Motor Speedway) and 12 churches! All these businesses shared one common goal – providing economic stability for their community by providing services such as banking, transportation and social welfare programs! It wasn’t until after World War II that things began to change significantly with major technological advancementsprefixing automobiles making small towns like southside much more accessible than they had been before! In 1948 an Interstate Highway was completed connecting northbound US 131 north of Muskegon City with southbound I-94 just outside town limits creating even more opportunities for growth for this neighborhood typified by its large single family homes which continued into the 21st century! Today there are over 150 businesses operating throughout southside Little Belt Township including 7 banks (the last being Peoples State Bank), 3 hotels/motels (Four Points Inn & Suites by Hilton Hotel later called Renaissance Motor Speedway) and 12 churches serving residents from all over Muskegon County! These businesses provide economic stability for their communityby providing services such as banking services such as checking accounts or debit cards through check processing orstorage; transportation including bus routes that bring people into town every day; social welfare programs like food stamps or Medicaid which helps low income residents stay housed and connected during tough times; plus many others that are not listed here because they are too remote or unimportant to warrant mention

Southgate, Michigan is a small town located in Macomb County, Michigan. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Southgate is the only village in Macomb County. The first settlers in the area that would become Southgate were Civil War veterans who had sailed to America on the "SS John F Kennedy" and landed at Detroit on September 13, 1837. They erected a log cabin on what is now Ridge Road and named it appropriately for their new home: Southgate Landing. In 1847, General James K. Polk sent his forces into Michigan as part of his campaign to overthrow Mexican rule in North America and establish American hegemony over Mexico’s lands. General Polk’s army passed through Southgate Landing on their way to Battle Creek where they destroyed much of Mexican military activity south of the river. In 1865, when Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as Ulysses S Grant’s second term as President of the United States, he visited Southgate Landing for dinner with local residents before traveling north to Marquette University in Milwaukee for an address given there that day about Reconstruction efforts across America following the Civil War. On February 12, 1896 – still a mere community of just over 100 people – a fire began in one of Southgate's gasoline tanks which quickly grew out of control and spread throughout the community until it consumed all but 10 homes within minutes (the final homes were saved by firefighters who arrived too late). It took more than three hours for firefighters from surrounding villages and towns to put out this massive blaze which killed 14 people (9 adults and 7 children) and injured dozens more. A memorial plaque dedicated to those lost has been located at mile marker 248 on I-96 near Gratiot Avenue in nearby Commerce Township since 2002; visitors are urged not drive onto exit #248 becauseof extensive damage done by years of rain & snow accumulation & vandalism during winter months
The first white settlement in what is now Southgate was a group of settlers that founded the town in 1812. The first store was built in 1814, and the first post office was established in 1816. Southgate became a municipality in 1893 and a city in 1961.
