Southgate is a small town in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Mentor-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate was incorporated on November 14, 1871. The first store in town was built by John Haggerty and his family. In 1881, the first electric light went out in Southgate and Lighthouse No. 1 was built to replace it. The area around Southgate has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,500 years and there are numerous reminders of this history including Standing Rock Indian Reservation which is located just east of town and contains dozens of archeological sites dating back to thousands of years ago. One example of an archeological site is the Pembina Site, which is located about two miles northeast of town on State Road 9062 Northwest. This site features several ancient ceremonial buildings as well as arrowheads, spears and other equipment used by the native people when they hunted game near present day Southgate Township boundaries during pre-contact times. In 1854–55, US Army Major James Kapp set up camp near what is now Southgate Township on land purchased from the Ojibwe tribe under Treaty #3 (1853). He discovered copper mines there but abandoned them after only a few months due to environmental problems with nearby water supplies caused by lead mining operations nearby. After some research he decided that he could not develop these mines because they were too close to residential areas in Lansing and East Lansing so he sold all his interests in those properties to General Mills Company for $1 million dollars on October 10th 1865 under Patent No.#5652/65 (the "Kapp Grant"). General Mills continued production at its old mine until 1913 when it closed down due to pollution from mercury particles produced from burning coal at their new plant north of town (now known as Old First National Bank). On January 5th 1928 local citizens met at Town Hall in order to petition state legislators into creating a municipal government for their township based on proposals made by local residents ending over one hundred years of disunity between townships within our community...On February 12th 1928 voters approved an ordinance granting city status to Southgate when it became apparent that no action had been taken by state legislators relative thereto...On May 3rd 1928 Mayor Gertrude Ayer declared that “Southgate City” would be “a place where we will live together as one people”...In 1932 Mayor Harry Fenton vetoed legislation establishing a police force due largely to concerns expressed about racial segregation being practiced within our community…In 1951 Mayor George Wiegand vetoed legislation establishing a library because he felt that such an establishment would create social unrest among our ethnic groups living adjacent thereto…In 1957 Mayor Clyde Dickson vetoed legislation authorizing school buses traveling through our township without stopping at my house because he felt that this would someday become necessary owing bothto increased automobile traffic within our community as well as rising rates for gasoline and oil….As you can see from these examples, even today there are many struggles related to governance between villages or communities within southcentral Michigan – struggles that continue even though officialdom often seems intent upon resolving them through negotiation or agreement rather than open conflictual discussion or confrontation." The town was founded in 1836 by settlers from New York City who were looking for land to farm after they were expelled from their home country during the American Revolution. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "to sit down." When it was first settled, Southgate had only one store and a few homes. The town grew rapidly because it became a stop on the Underground Railroad for escaped slaves and other fugitive residents during the early 19th century. In 1855, Southgate acquired its own post office which served until 1868 when it merged with Saginaw Township to form Saginaw County. In 1907, Southgate became part of Midland County when that area was divided between that county and Mackinac Island counties following a Boundary Adjustment Act ruling that declared all of Upper Peninsula including Midland as part of Michigan rather than Illinois due to disagreements over land ownership among various Native American groups.Southgate remained an independent municipality until 1967 when it merged with neighboring Bay City into what is now called Bay City Township (southwest side).

John Gault, one of the original settlers in the area. He had come to Griffen Lake before arriving in Southgate and saw an opportunity to set up shop on his own land east of town. The first store was built in 1836 by Captain Gault and his family. By 1840, there were several stores and a post office operating in Southgate proper. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its position near major trade routes and its easy access to water supplies which made it a popular place to live and trade goods。 In 1847, Captains Gault, Howell (the father of future Mayor George Howell)and three other pioneer fathers founded what became known as "The Old Colony". This group purchased 640 acres north of present-day Southgate from Joseph Laughlin for $3 per acre ($40 per kilometer).
